Video game development is the process of creating a video game. Traditional commercial PC and console games are normally funded by a publisher and take several years to develop.

• Game development is undertaken by a game developer—ranging from an individual to a large company.
• The smallest developer companies work on several titles at once. This is necessary because of the time taken between shipping a game. Small companies may structure contracts, ask for advances on royalties.
• The game revenue from retails is divided among the parties along the distribution chain, such as — developer, publisher, retail, manufacturer and console royalty.

History of Video Games

• The history of video games goes as far back as the early 1950s. Since the 1980s, video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment and a part of modern popular culture in most parts of the world. During the 1970s, the first generation of home consoles emerged, including the popular game Pong.

                     

• The golden age of arcade video games was from 1978 to 1982. Video arcades with large, graphics-decorated coin-operated machines were common at malls and popular, affordable home consoles such as the Atari 2600 and Intellivision enabled people to play games on their home TVs.
• The third generation of consoles, which were 8-bit units, emerged from 1983 to 1995. The fourth generation of consoles, which were 16-bit models, emerged from 1987 to 1999.
• During the 2000s, the sixth generation of consoles emerged (1998–2013). During this period, online gaming and mobile games became important.
• In 2013, the eighth generation of consoles emerged, including Nintendo's Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, Microsoft's Xbox One, and Sony's PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. PC gaming has been holding a large market share in Asia and Europe.

• App stores created by Apple and Google, plus the low-cost retail price of downloadable phone apps, games available on smartphones increasingly rival the video game console market. Among the most successful mobile games of this period is Angry Birds, which, released in 2009, reached 2 million downloads within one year.

• A game engine is a software framework designed for the creation and development of video games. Developers use them to create games for consoles, mobile devices and personal computers. There are the most popular game engines:

 Unity Engine

• You can create any 2D or 3D game with Unity. You can make it with ease, you can make it highly-optimized and beautiful. A lot of indie developers use Unity since Unity 5 is the Personal Edition, which is free for everyone to download.

  Unreal Engine

• One of the most popular and used game engine is the Unreal Engine by Epic Games. The original version was released in 1998 and 17 years later it continues being used for some of the biggest games every year.
• The latest version, Unreal Engine 4, is said to be the easiest one to use when in the hands of a professional.
