LET'S SEE HOW SMART YOU ARE

I was reading news on my phone (naijaloaded.com.ng) to be precised and I came across this post that got me confused. So, I want to share it with you to get a solution.

Four criminals are caught and are to be punished. The judge allows them to be freed if they can solve a puzzle. If they do not, they will be hung. They agreed.

The 4 criminals are lined up on some steps(shown in picture). They are all facing same direction. A wall separates the fourth man from the other three.

SO TO SUMMARIZE:

Man 1 can see Man 2 and Man 3.
Man 2 can see Man 3.
Man 3 can see none of the others.
Man 4 can see none of the others.

The criminals are wearing hats. They are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. The men initially don’t know what colour of hat they are wearing.

They are told to shout out the colour of the hat that they are wearing as soon as they know for sure what colour it is.

They are not allowed to turn round or move. They are not allowed to talk to each other. They are not allowed to take their hats off.

Who is the first person to shout out and why?

I Ave never been good at these. My mind just doesn't work that way. So, I had to cheat and look up the answer. Does this mean I'm stupid? Absolutely not!
Just because someone cannot work out a solution to a problem they have never before encountered, does not mean they are stupid or uneducated, it simply means they did not have enough information to work out the problem. There are caviots to the whole problem anyway. There seems to be a lot of assumption going on in it. Assuming the judge was telling the truth to begin with is dangerous. Facing certain death or uncertain death is still facing death. It was cruel for the judge to make the men figure out for themselves this problem. What if he, the judge, lied about the colors of the hats? How does the second guy figure out he's wearing a white hat by inferring from the guy in front of him? What if the colors were in a different order? This is a troubling question with too many variables, to my mind. Anyway, like I said, I have never been good at these. Mostly I think due to trust issues. We can only ever really trust ourselves and what we know, and what we know is what we are taught. What if we weren't taught colors? What if we weren't taught numbers? What if...
Anyway, this was still a very interesting riddle.
Thanks,
X
