From what I have read, it comes straight from the owner/company's pocket, assuming they use it write it off as an expense. Other social media sites, Twitter Insta Facebook Reddit, all are provided free content by their users so steemit plan on paying for their content which hopes to draw big names from other sites, I'm assuming. Definitely an interesting take and plan on following it to see how it plays out.
