They Promised Us Flying Cars

I have been a sci-fi fan all my life. I grew up with the likes of Star Trek - all of them. Star Wars - all of them and all the really bad sci-fi shows on TV like the cartoons, oh sorry - animations for you millennials, like The Jetsons, flyin' around in their cars that have bubbles coming out the back - not sure what those were but the vehicles made funny sounds! Where they didn't have to walk 'cause the sidewalks moved. We do have those in the big airports, but they're supposed to be like two hundred feet off the ground heading toward cool looking buildings with glass saucer bubble tops! Not to mention our own robot maid. I know I could really use one of those.

That was just The Jetsons. What about the other sci-fi shows from the decades past to the present. Not to mention all the movies. And today with the CGI and awesome visuals. Then you go outside and see that vehicle that was designed by a computer using carriage technology from some warmed-over yesteryear.

We all grew up with these promises of a future that had neat stuff in it we could get if we were good boys and girls.

We sent men to the moon. We were on our way! Then the space shuttle blew up and the cool space program was scrapped. Now it's just a lame space program as far as advancement is concerned. No space ships, just satellites.

I remember when cool tech came out and they said it was created with "Space age technology!" Where did that go? Where's my flying car!?

So disappointing.

All we here now is, "We don't have the money, we can't afford it." or "Too much bad stuff going on, need to handle that first." Screw that. Remember when JFK said we're going to the moon and if you don't like it you can kiss my ass!? Well, those weren't his exact words but you get my drift.

Where is that passion? Where is that vision? (this is my point of all this)

We should at least have cars running on hydrogen. The most abundant element in the universe. It's byproduct is H2O - water! "Oh, it's not safe, it's too expensive to manufacture." Uh huh, sure. And gasoline in a metal can strapped to your trunk floor is safe? Two words - Ford Pinto. To be fair, many tanks are plastic now.

I know it's a ridiculous thing to expect and even talk about. I don't care. How cool would it be to have a car like in the Fifth Element?

We did put men on the moon you know. We beat gravity then. We had far less powerful computers too. It's just physics. How hard can it be?

Yeah... where are my promised robot minions friends !

How am I are we supposed to all have our private space stations if we haven't even put one up yet !

I suspect it might have something to do with us relying on governments to bring about this superb techno future.

Governments are mostly innovative in times of crisis, and that's the main reason we ever went to the moon, to one up the Russians and have better missile/rocket tech than them.

Now that we're in relatively peaceful times, Governments don't seek to upset the balance, but preserve it.

They seem to thrive more on controlled environments, and relatively gullible/stupid people. They wouldn't want everyone to be intelligent because then they'd lose control, they couldn't do more or less everything they want without objections.

I believe the reason we're finally advancing on the technological part is the same that's got a lot of people really worried.

Corporations taking on more and more power.

And since they're nearly all cash-flow positive (which nearly no government appears to be...) they can innovate at a much faster rate than.

That and most of the big one's nowadays have been created in an ambience of innovation, and seek to become better at everything faster than their competitors.

I personally think this is good, as long as we remember to remind them from time to time about all those pesky "human rights" and "natural preservation" issues the bigger Corps tend to forget all about in their hurry XD

There is definitely a balance that needs to be maintained. Many good points.

I remember people talk about having small settlements on the moon by 2020 back in the mid 1990's. We haven't even tried going back yet. We had such high hopes that we failed to live up to.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about. In this case they promised us the moon and delivered squat!

I don't want a flying car, I want teleportation. "Beam me down" kinda stuff!

Oh, ladyrebecca, you are a dreamer! I'm right there with you!
