Public vs private

in #future6 years ago

With prices being what they are nowadays, some users have been coming to me asking if the rise of new private blockchains could be a reason to the weak performance of Bitcoin and other blockchain projects. Meaning companies and individuals using the advantages of the blockchain tech to create their own platforms to be used instead of open-source and free to use platforms that exist today such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Steem.

I'm not going to say that those private blockchains won't stand a chance at first and I'm sure with the money these people have they will be able to create something great and manage to get a lot of people interested in it, but there is one thing that will always lay like a shadow over them compared to the blockchains we know today. Censorship and freedom.

Hopefully most people by now know the difference between the front-end Steemit and the blockchain Steem, some things you may not know is that Steemit which is operated by the company Steemit Inc does have some rules to it (even though not many compared to other centralized platforms) but they have to abide to them because of law and their residency in the U.S. The rules consist of things such as not allowing users under the age of 13 to create and use accounts and material that is highly #NSFW and illegal should not be visible to the front-end. So in a way part of that freedom is revoked there and some things may not be visible to people searching for them on the front-end even though they know they exist on the blockchain. For now that's all well and good as those things is something the majority don't want to show up on the front-end, but as we have noticed over time companies tend to bend the rules more and more and act according to other powers effecting their decisions.

Facebook and Twitter for instance have often outright banned users because of political reasons which others deem not ban worthy. Not only were their accounts completely removed but those users lost their freedom of speech.

Now imagine a blockchain created by JP Morgan ( which exists ) or other ones that may be created for social media. Where do you think those people will draw the line to censorship and freedom of speech? Of course they may seem nice and censorship resistant in the beginning, it would probably be used as an advantage to get more people to join at first... But during times where the core internet we know today is facing censorship, middlemen and being controlled by the government or other corporations we might really want to start and think about the future we want to create for ourselves. @theycallmedan mentioned this in a video recently, people have been suffering for years from poverty, working more jobs than previously thought humanly possible just to end up in debt anyway because of how the economy has been run by the elite, to leech as much as possible from the people and put them in debt for decades, even sacrificing the planet we live on just so they can have a more luxurious present.

We have the chance now to entangle ourselves from their grasps, not leave them in control of everything. The mentality of "investing" fiat into crypto needs to change into "getting out from their game", if you're not playing their game with the odds heavily stacked against you then they will eventually lose. Let's create our own future, one that we control and is secured through math. Let's keep the future of the new internet open and free for anyone to use.

I don't buy the legitimacy of private blockchains for a second. We all know that the data structure of blockchain is not the best in the world. The advantage to it is that it is immutable and makes censorship much more difficult. Plus, on the financial side, it does remove 3rd party counter risk.

Any blockchain that is private is subject to the entities that control it. We see with Steemit how being at the mercy of their financial solvency is dangerous.

And for those who the entities mentioned using private chain have so much money, look up what happened to AIG.

Ahhhh... @taskmaster4450 ... 'AIG'...Another 'Delaware', criminal Corporation; one of the many 'Puppet Masters' pulling the strings of Joe Biden and his cohorts... (Dupont, Dow, Hercules, GM, Bank of America, Chase...and the list goes on, and on, and on...

Wilmington, Delaware??? (Who Knew???)

I love steemit atmosphere.
After using steemit a few month, i just open facebook one or two times a week.

Decentralization, censorship-resistent, freedom, democracy, they are all relative terms. Some people go to me and say "Steem is centralized", and I say "it's more decentralized than anything out there".

Great actricle Acid, and more or less we share the same mindset for that matter. But to be absolutely honest with you, I think that the whole “free internet” thing will take ages.

I think people are not yet ready and possibly misinformed about crypto currencies. I can see it in my everyday life. They think it’s a fraud...

I wish I could find a way to persuade more and more that this is the future. I ofter use examples such as : “When the INTERNET first came out, would you ever think that you would be able to talk to (and see him too) a relative who lives in the other side of the globe through an app...and for free? But they are full of fear...

That’s why I believe that in order to have mass adoption, we should have patience and think long term. A lot of patience actually...

it’s a unexplainable magic to keep myself using Steemit/Partiko than others social apps and games. I can see the part of decentralised more,

Eventually all chains will be controlled. We are only in the wild west days. Could last a decade or less.

Speaking of the social media platform, I think the most important we value on Steemit is the reality and high quality of many posts made by so many people from countries all over the world and that's why although in such a bearish trend now, many people are still active in this ecosystem.
I trust STEEM blockchain, and I like this platform compared to other social media apps.

Thanks for your motivational work! :)

This is useful thanks
