Futsal in Australia - Cockburn EWA vs Spearwood Lions
Cockburn EWA vs Spearwood Lions
Friday night Pro Futsal continues from 7.50pm local time when Cockburn EWA take on the Spearwood Lions in a matchup that has ramifications for both. Following Cambio Cumbre's upset loss last weekend to the Canning Ultra Tigers, Cockburn were able to snatch 2nd place on the WA State Futsal League ladder, while Spearwoods loss to Stirling
meant they slipped outside a coveted playoff spot and into 5th.
Last time these sides met was round two, when perhaps Spearwood were still finding their feet in the big time, and it was a typically brash Cockburn outfit that hammered the Lions 6-1. Fans can expect a much closer match this time around, as Spearwood have come on in leaps and bounds since then, with wins over Murdoch, Fremantle, South Perth and the Canning Ultra Tigers.
Key man Roberto Armellini (ITA) is still working his way back to peak fitness and has been a massive addition to the Lions lineup, while former Championship top scorer James Oldroyd (ENG) could also be dangerous in a matchup which should suit his style of play as he looks to drive forward in one on one situations.
For Cockburn, they will head into the game as slight favorites, with Alek Kukic (SRB) in fine form, and a level above what the Lions offer in attack. Stefan Cjivanovic (SRB) has also emerged as a threat, with the former Melville marksman starting to look full of running again.
A win for Cockburn and they will almost certainly be playing finals this season (even at this early stage) while Spearwood will propel themselves back into playoff contention with victory on Friday.
