My Bespoke Furniture Designs

in #furniture2 years ago

Gosh I have been so busy since returning from my little trip to Bangkok. I tried to to update everyone here on my newest projects etc but just unable to find the time. Today I have free time this morning so would like to show some photos of the QC inspection I did at my furniture factory on Tuesday.

The furniture is all for one project that I have actually posted before. We designed and built every piece of furniture in this villa so the client has absolute bespoke and unique pieces. The process is quite lengthy but it goes more or less like this.... First I create renders with conceptual designs of how the furniture may look in each room the we work with the client until we get an exact design of each piece.

Once the designs are agreed we create "Design Intent" drawings and pass them to our factory where they work them up in to "Shop Drawings" Here is an example of a design intent drawing from one of the pieces....

Although these drawings are very detailed and have all the measurements and specs they are still not detailed enough for the carpentry team which is why they then mark them up in to shop drawings. Each piece will have several pages of shop drawings including minute details of how each corner fits together etc etc. Here is an example from the above design intent drawing....

Here is what the piece above has finished up like - It's only a small piece that is for the master bathroom. It's made from reclaimed teak and is absolutely unique. It looks just like my original conceptual design renders and I'm super happy with the end result.

So anyway the entire furniture package was about thirty different pieces of furniture including indoor and outdoor. Every piece was made from reclaimed teak as the main structure and many pieces were finished with teak veneers. This project was very delayed because the actual villa build was delayed. Now they are putting the final touches on the villa and my team are busy finishing all the built-ins and joinery. The furniture package all passed my QC with the exception of a few small pieces. Here are some photos of the day.....

Setting up this factory has been a long and painful road for me and my business partner. Just as we finally had the factory built and the machinery ordered and the staff in place and the first orders in - Covid arrived. It was heartbreaking for us as we simply had no means of running the business. There was nothing to do but shut it and wait. Imagine the frustration. We invested so much money and time in to getting this up and running and it was just taken away from us in a heartbeat. 2020 was a disaster. 2021 we were able to get moving again but we were so far behind. It takes time to establish reliable sources of wood, get staff trained and get systems in place. Every piece of furniture we made was a challenge. Every order was something new. Finally now as Thailand is reopening to business and tourism we are feeling confident and excited again. We have lots of orders and our team are getting better and faster every month. We have expanded our operations and are now building a painting and finishing room.

Im very proud of my carpentry team and my business partner. In spite of all the challenges we have faced and actually every one of our team has been struck down by Covid at different times - still we are finding the way forward! Next step is to place the finished furniture into the villa and present to the owner.
