  1. Vaquita
From the water, they might just look like a shark or a regular dolphin. And although they belong to the porpoise group, the vaquita stands (or swims) as its own animal. While they look quite large in relation to all these other teeny animals, the vaquita measures quite short in comparison to other porpoises. Average females grow to be 55.4 inches or 140.6 centimeters while adult makes will be just slightly smaller.

  2. Paedocypris
People might call each other sardines when insulting each other’s height and weight, but they’re not even the smallest fish. We get it though. Name-calling someone a Paedocypris just doesn’t seem to have the same connotation. This genus of cyprinid fish live in the swamp waters of Borneo, Bintan, and Sumatra. Females, once mature, will be about 0.31 inches or 7.9 millimeters.

  3. Northern Saw-Whet Owl
Of all the animals in the world, one of the most mysterious and stealthy is the owl. SO imagine a really tiny owl, just lurking in the trees. Both cute and creepy, right? Introducing the Northern saw-whet owl, a small North American owl that grows to be as long as 8.7 inches.

  4. Virgin Islands Dwarf Gecko
It may be difficult to spot this browl colored gecko amongst the rocks they live in--and that’s not even accounting for their size. The Virgin Islands dwarf gecko was discovered in 1964 while a biologist was out in the slopes of Virgin Fora in the British Virgin Islands. The smallest of the amniotes, which includes birds, mammals, and reptiles.

  5. Fairy Penguin
Whether you call them fairy penguins or little penguins, the idea comes across--they’re small for penguins. These birds stand at a height of 13 inches or 33 centimeters. Unlike more common penguins we’re used to hearing about, the fairy penguins live on the coasts of New Zealand and Australia. Like other penguins, however, they use their flippers to swim. They eat fish and crustaceans as you would expect from swimming predators but some species might also feed on jellyfish.

  6. Vechur Cow
Even though cows are mostly peaceful animals, they can be quite big. But not vechur cow, which doesn’t stand quite as tall at 90 centimeters and are a little lighter, weighing in at 130 kilograms. This rare breed of cattle were named after the village Vechoor, located in Kerala, India. The Guinness Book of World Records categorizes it as the smallest breed of cattle, yet they produce much more milk than other cows.

  7. Kitti’s Hog-Nosed Bat
In the limestone caves of Myanmar and Thailand lives this tiny bat. Named Kitti’s hog-nosed bat but also referred to as the bumblebee bat, these bats have reached a critical level of survival. Nowadays, the bats residing in Thailand live only in one known, small population.

  8. Etruscan Shrew
If you picked up an Etruscan shrew, they would be about the size of your thumb if you don’t count the length of their tail. Adult Etruscan shrews only grow to be 1.6 inches or 4 centimeters long. By mass, it counts as the smallest mammal in the world, with a weight of 0.063 ounces or 1.8 grams. Their diets consists of mostly invertebrates and small vertebrates and live in warm, damp climates.

  9. Bee Hummingbird
Most hummingbirds are so small and fly so fast it can be difficult to even see them fly by you anyways. And that task would be even greater with the bee hummingbird. Named the smallest bird in the world (nice title), the bee hummingbird lives endemic to the Cuban archipelago. They feed on nectar, and in one day they can gather nectar from about 1,500 flowers. A full grown hummingbird measures 2.4 inches long, with females usually bigger than their male counterparts.

  10. Blue Dragon Sea Slug
At first glance, they look like some sort of alien species that came from some marine planet. Then you see how small it is and then you wonder even more if it could possibly be real. Clearly since it’s on this list it’s real, but you’ve got to admit the blue dragon sea slug looks like a neat little surreal thing. As you can see, they fit in the palm of a hand with lots of room to spare. At the largest, they can be as big as 1.2 inches or 3 centimeters long and will usually be colored gray and blue and have dark blue stripes. Other names include the sea swallow or the blue angel.
