What happens when the most dangerous part of your journey isn’t your or another driver’s lack of skill, but just the path itself?

  1. Los Caracoles Pass
The Spanish name of this road translates into English as “Snails Pass” for the languid twists and turns of its road. This mountain pass is located in the Andes, located between the South American countries of Chile and Argentina and is the major transport route from Santiago, Chile, into Argentina’s Mendoza City. The road was opened in 1980, with the middle of Tunnel of the Redeeming Christ marking the border between Chile and Argentina. The whole tunnel measures 3,080 meters or 10,105 feet long. Due to weather restrictions like heavy snow in the winter, road inaccessibility and rockfalls can be a danger. Once, in 2013, about 15,000 Chilean citizens got stranded on the Argentinian side of the road as 50 centimeters of snow fell and freezing temperatures took over.

  2. James Dalton Highway
The full name of this road in Alaska is the James W. Dalton Highway, and spans over 414 miles. Some still refer to it by its old name, the North Slope Haul Road. But it was named after James Dalton later on, who was an Alaskan engineer and was a key figure in early oil exploration in Northern Alaska. The road was built in 1974 with the purpose of being a supply road for the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System. Dalton Highway starts at the Elliott Highway and ends right by the Arctic Ocean in Deadhorse. It’s one of the most isolated roads in the United States, with only 3 towns to be found along the route. The roads are mostly gravel and the cold temperatures of the environment bring on a lot of snow and ice.

  3. Skippers Canyon Road
This breathtaking gorge is also the site of a pretty daunting road. Skippers Canyon is located a few kilometers north of Queenstown in New Zealand. The canyon was an important site during the gold rush of the 1800s which is what constituted the construction of a road into the canyon. The bridge you see here was made for the miners, but nowadays the roads are mostly a tourist attraction.

  4. Zoji Pass
Zoji Pass, or Zoji La, is a high mountain pass located in the high altitude terrain in Jammu and Kashmir, India. From this angle, you can barely make out the narrow pathways etched into the side of the mountain. Though it’s a menacing journey, the road is a necessary part of life for the inhabitants of the nearby villages as it links them to the rest of civilization, even if it can be basically impossible to get through during the winter.

  5. Le Passage du Gois
Located in France is a road that’s like something out of a fairytale. One of the most dangerous roads in the world is only accessible a couple hours a day. Trying to traverse it otherwise would mean getting your vehicle caught in the prevailing waters. This periodically flooded road leads to the island of Noirmoutier from Beauvoir-sur-Mer. At high tide, the road gets flooded twice a day. It was even used as part of the Tour de France in 1999, when one rider slipped on the wet surface of the road. The passage was then used again for the Tour de France in 2011 where it was utilized as a starting point for the race. It was founded all the way back in 1577 and every year, there’s even a foot race that takes place during the onset of the high tide.

  6. Taroko Gorge Road
Through the gorge of one of Taiwan’s 9 national parks is a road that offers both stunning views and plenty of danger. This road was made by carving out the rock of the mountain, where the roads are winding, narrow paths where only one vehicle can pass through at a time. The height can induce the stress of vertigo, plus landslide activity is another thing you have to look out for should you decide to drive through the gorge. Heavy rainfall is prevalent in the area, which causes all the landslides and rock falls. No wonder it’s considered one of the top most dangerous roads in the world.

  7. Old Yungas Road
This path goes by a few names, such as Old Yungas Road, Grove’s Road, Road of Fate, and even Death Road. But officially, it’s known as the North Yungas Road. The road starts from La Paz and goes all the way to Coroico, a journey that measures 56 kilometers or 35 miles. It’s located in the Yungas region of Bolivia, and is considered the most dangerous road in the world. Parts of the road descend into rainforests, where high cliffs and steep hills can also be found. There are very few guard rails installed along this mostly narrow, single vehicle road, with cliff drops measures up to 2,000 feet. While you would think the danger would be enough to deter people from traveling on it, it’s that danger factor that also made it a popular tourist attraction. There have been efforts to make the road safer, though it still remains the world’s most dangerous road. In fact, one estimation a decade ago reported at least 200 fatalities along the road.
