MemeLogic - Thoughts On Hate Speech
You Need To Choose One
It's either we all choose to have free speech or we all choose that some speech is labeled as hate speech, which is then banned and or censored.
The first point to note is that the United States is one of the only countries in the world that completely protects free speech, and it's also very important to note that there is no amendment made for hate speech. Well you're probably going to say that there are many countries that have free speech, but as they say, the devil is in the details. It's a very simple philosophy, you are either free or you are not, you are either free to say anything or you are not, as soon as there is even a small exception placed on that freedom, you are no longer free.
The problem with hate speech is rather simple, how does one define what hate speech is? Words are not able to physically hurt you, they are however able to upset you and offend you. But taking offense to when someone says something is subjective, what upset you might not upset me. The other huge problem with hate speech is also who gets to decide what is hateful and what is not. Will these rules be equally applied across the board or do these rules only apply to some people?
"I am absolutely opposed to political correctness. You cannot confront hate speech until you've experienced it. You need to hear every side of the issue instead of just one." - Jane Elliott
To give you a great example of when hate speech laws completely fail, just look at South Africa where we do have hate speech laws. Everyone has the right to freedom of speech, but it does not include "advocacy of hatred that is based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion" which may seem a little vague, and it is. The major problem here is that the South African government only prosecutes people when it suits them, like when a old lady compared black people on a beech to monkeys. They however did not have any problem with a few politicians calling for the murder and eradication of white folks. The similar kind of outrage can be seen happening in media all over the world, and it's not about equality, it's about giving a group special rights, which is the opposite of equality.
"If a university official's letter accusing a speaker of having a proclivity to commit speech crimes before she's given the speech - which then leads to Facebook postings demanding that Ann Coulter be hurt, a massive riot and a police-ordered cancellation of the speech - is not hate speech, then there is no such thing as hate speech." - Ann Coulter

I believe in free speech..... was a bit disappointed to see that “hate speech” is listed as an official reason to downvote someone on steemit.... because as i understand this is supposed to be a censorship resistant social network..... and as soon as someone decides there are things that are acceptable to talk about and things that are not acceptable.... then steemit has become censored..... don’t get me wrong.... i think bullying should be downvoted to fuck.... but banning words and ideas is not the solution
People claiming hate speech never seem to have any vaild arguments. They are stuck in a child like, tattle tale, mode of thinking.
hahaha..... WHY ... SO....SERIOUS!

So... I take it you're not a fan of the United States obscenity law that prohibits free speech in certain instances?
