TODAY IS THE FIRST EVER EPISODE OF....."ASK A METALHEAD."

Hi there and welcome to the first ASK A METALHEAD post!!!!

This will be a weekly episode where I take heavy metal questions from the steemit comunity and try to answer them using my extensive experience and my PHD background in metallurgy (the science and study of rock and metal)

Let's begin with our very first question from Mary from Canada...

" My boyfriend took me to a SLAYER concert and I saw some guy on stage start swinging his head around and his hair was spinning....what was that called and what purpose does it serve?"

Well Mary that was called a windmill. Let's go into the definition...

Windmill is a style of dance in which participants spin their heads in a quick circular motion, making long hair look like it's spinning , typically performed to "aggressive" live music. It originated in the heavy metal scenes of California and Washington, D.C. in the late 1980s, and is now a staple at heavy metal shows across the world.

Variations of windmilling exist, and can be done alone as well as in groups. Windmilling usually happens in an area called the "pit" (sometimes called a "mosh pit") near the stage. It is intended to be energetic and full of body contact.

While windmilling is seen as a form of positive fan feedback or expression of enjoyment, it has also drawn criticism over dangerous excesses occurring in offshoots. Injuries have been reported in mosh pits and a few deaths have occurred in very rare but extreme cases.

In addition Mary I have found a few more uses that were not in the definition...

Not only does it look badass playing guitar at 400 bpm....

Makes doing just about any labour job more fun and badass....

Makes painting a room a hundred times easier....

Helps loosen and strengthen neck muscles....
