Elaborate Fish Analogies in Korean Crypto (Props to @carrotcake)

There’s one aspect of crypto that all newcomers need to get acquainted with as soon as jumping into the space - the hierarchy of fish analogies. You’ve probably already heard of “whales” - investors with large amounts of any given crypto. It scales down from there to “orcas” with medium-sized holdings, “dolphins” with smaller ones, and “minnows” with virtually little to no crypto to their name. These labels are even integrated officially into platforms like @busy where everyone can see what kind of amphibian they are.

Koreans take this imagery very seriously, even going so far as to self-designate as “plankton,” someone who has absolutely no idea or experience in the blockchain world. The KR community loves their analogies and catchphrases, and these all bring a brilliant character to the oftentimes too technical world of blockchain.

Each term is great fun to look into, but the funniest one that I’ve seen so far is perfectly captured in @carrotcake’s cover for her webtoon for the @kr-marketing project.

Her series is a vertical-scrolling webtoon that goes through all aspects of the blockchain world in an approachable and satirical way. @carrotcake’s sense of humor is perfectly articulated in her aesthetic talent.

And the fish term used here is brilliant.

An ocean sunfish is an enormous creature that dwells at the bottom of tropical waters. It is often seen as the butt of science-oriented jokes as its intelligence is relatively very low. It often chokes on plastic bags that it mistakes for jellysfish, is covered is bacteria, and is one of the most vulnerable prey in the aquatic ecosystem. It is likely the inspiration behind the most powerless Pokemon ever, the Magikarp.

Koreans jokingly use this fish to describe people who are relatively new to the crypto space and have a very hard time stomaching every aspect of the new technology. In particular, these blockchain users are nauseated by the rapid ups and downs of the market and cannot readily digest major changes in technology and network.

Even if you can’t understand Korean, you can definitely appreciate the types of evident stories @carrotcake goes into. The crypto world definitely needs more of this type of representation that pokes fun at itself while bringing significant development to the public eye.
