I Foolishly Volunteered To Plan The Games For My Family's Christmas Party... Here's What I Came Up With.

in #funny8 years ago

Was anyone else out there dumb enough to volunteer to plan the games for a holiday party this year?

Before I do anything, I ask myself, "Would an idiot do that?"
And if the answer is "yes", I do not do that thing.

Unfortunately, I was an idiot. I was "that guy".

I was "that guy" who says, "Thanks for putting together the party, just let me know if you need some help." Then I walked away anticipating running to the store the morning of the party to buy some delicious cookies and maybe a taco dip.

Then the host called me on it. He actually asked me for help.

Wait. Doesn't he know how this little game works? I offered to help in order to appear nice. Not to actually be nice. Oh well, guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and follow through.

Oh who am I kidding? I love planning this kind of stuff!

Each year my extended family has a party a few weeks before Christmas. Instead of dealing with the stress on the actual holiday, we rent out a room at the local park district and get everyone together for some family fun. We eat, laugh, Santa makes an appearance... and we play games.

This year it's my job to plan the games. I already have one taken care of because my family loves "Dirty Poker". (No! It is not that kind of poker.)

Most normal people call it "Yankee Swap", "Grinch Exchange", "Thieving Santa", or "Dirty Santa" (but that actually sounds worse than Dirty Poker).

The rules of this game are very simple. Each player brings an inexpensive wrapped gift (my family sets a limit of $20) and places them in a pile in the middle of the room. Each player draws a number from 1 to the number of people playing. Participants take their turn according to the number he/she chose. On your turn, you can either choose an wrapped gift or steal an already opened one from another player. When choosing a wrapped gift, you must unwrap it and show the crowd what was inside. The first person obviously must take an unopened present from the middle to get the game going. If a player has his/her gift stolen, he/she must choose a new unopened gift from the center and reveal its contents to the crowd. Play continues until everyone has had a turn and now owns a gift. Immediately after the conclusion of the game, the trading of gifts (and lots of laughing) begins.

So I have one game down, but I needed a few more.

This looks like fun... but I hate to end a family
party with one (or several) trips to the hospital.

I decided to try a "pub quiz" type format. I scoured the web and found some cool stuff. If you'd like to see the originals, I have provided links at the bottom of this post.

I'm going to start out with "Name that Tune".

I found a pretty good one on youtube.

Next, we will have a picture round.

I love card games like Uno or Old Maid. :)

Yep, tabletop games are the best for family gatherings. No need for creative planning, just bust out Settlers of Catan.
