How Spectator Sports Are Like Masturbation, BUT MUCH WORSE
To me, spectator sports are a form of masturbation; "spiritual masturbation", if you will. In the same way masturbation helps keep the population down, so do spectator sports keep us from exerting our will to change the world.
Grown men watch and live vicariously through other men that they perceive as doing something awesome, and even noble. They will adopt their wins and losses as their own, giving loads of their time and attention, orgasming at a score. They will spend their precious and limited passions on them, like busting a nut on the carpet, slowly being drained of the will and way to their own pursuits, and saddest of all, the things good humanity truly needs manpower for.
But hey, Im not judging. I dont think there is anything wrong with a little masturbation, but you dont want to be known as a masturbation FANatic, do you? And there is plenty to be righteously FANatical about.
How are women even fucking these men? I mean, you will have grown men fighting over sports while their kids are being systematically dumbed down and poisoned from all angles. This motherfucker will break a TV for the Cowboys but wont show up to a PTA meeting with just half of that passion?

Right this very moment there are millions of men, together, in spiritual masturbation orgies, with adrenaline pumping, emotions roaring, for grown men somewhere playing with balls. And again, nothing wrong with a little masturbation, but this shit is out of control. What a tragic waste of masculine will.
There is masturbation, and then there is the real thing. There are sports, and then there is the real thing. Imagine me getting bent out of shape about sports. Maybe I should propose to my PC while Im at it.

I have read several of Chris Hedges' books and they are all thought provoking and excellent critiques of an empire in decay.
Hedges is a truth god. I never sense a bias when I read or listen to him, and that is rare in this day and age.
I completely agree... he's the real deal. A deep thinker, an intellectual, and harsh critic but also he's very grounded in morality. Though, I never feel that he's speaking down to his readers from a position of authority.
How many Princeton professors spend their free time educating inmates for free, or at all?

To me, the pro sports franchises seem to be something that men can bond over, a universal touchpoint that nearly all American men have in common and which will provide a source of conversation and identity when men meet other men. It's a common denominator. I've always been amazed how powerful and universal that is. When any previously unacquainted men get put together in a social situation any one of them can bring up the latest NFL or NBA draft pick and immediately all the other men will be able to chime in intelligently on the subject. That's how I've always seen the purpose of pro sports.
I don't think that necessarily contradicts anything else you have said. I agree in principle that as long as anyone is living through the actions of their heroes they won't be able to become the hero of their own lives. People can live vicariously through athletes, musicians, Hollywood actors who have been installed as the Gods of our American Pantheon and whose lives, like the lives of the Gods for the ancient Greeks, provide us with endless second hand entertainment.
While I have admired various athletes over the years for their performances, I have never been a fan of any given team. The idea that I should automatically identify with a particular sports team because by an accident of birth I live in their geographic area has always seemed false and arbitrary to me. I used to upset people in High School when I told them I didn't give a damn whether our football team won its games or went to the championships. "Where's your school spirit?" they would ask. "Why should I care about some football team just because my parents happened to have moved to a particular school district? It's completely random."

This has long been my favorite synopsis of Sports. Also, a harvard Anthropologist wrote about how football is culturally sanctioned homosexual expression.

I could say something really funny about the first picture, the one of the guy watching football on his computer while getting busy with a woman, but I dont want to offend you. Lol.
I basically agree with you. I've thought of television as being he same thing, and especially computer games. Truth be told, I love games, but I haven't played the, in 12 years cause I just have so many things I want to do. I would much rather work to get my album ready, finish my book of short stories, connect with steemians and do whatever I can to inspire. Once I accomplish a bit more I will take a month long final fantasy break, still need to play 12 and 15.

I have a different view of today's sports.
Even though I love to partake in sports viewing I believe that it is all driven at ad revenue. Sports exist on the level that it does not to strip our masculinity but try to encourage us to spend. I am aware of it and participate willingly.
As to the living vicariously through our favorite sports teams...you bet we do. Just like we live through our family's trials and tribulations, through our friend's highs and lows, and even through our pet's good times and bad times. It's not masturbating, it is connecting on an emotional level that makes most humans feel like they are participating with thousands or even millions of other people. No shame in that.
I have seen a large part of North America attending various sports events. No regrets.
And...I tend to feel quite frisky after a great sporting event...just saying.
