Fungi Friday - Yellow Morels and Some other CharacterssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #fungifriday6 years ago (edited)

Found a good batch of coveted yellow morels aka Morchella esculenta.

I look for dead trees in the forest with bark falling off them to guide me to where they like to grow.

This is an example of a full grown morel.

This one was still expanding. They are a bit more gray and small while they are growing.

This is an example of and older one, it started turning reddish brown. I ruined this poor millipede's home.

I also found this "peckerhead" aka half-free morel or Morchella punctipes. These are edible though they are really brittle and when cooked don't have a nice texture. They seem to have a more mushroomy taste than other morels.

I also found a Verpa bohemica which is in the morel family. These are distinguished by the cap not attaching to the base of the stem. The cap is only attached at the top then hangs down like a dress around the stem. I don't eat these because there are some toxins in them if not cooked the right way, the toxin causes bad gas and in big doses lack of coordination.

I found this false morel aka Gyromitra brunnea. I know people who eat this but it contains a toxin called monomethylhydrazine which in high enough doses can cause liver and kidney failure as well as seizures as it depletes you of vitamin b6. The toxin builds up over time and is also carcinogenic. So i avoid these even though they are exciting to find since true morels often grow near them.

These are pretty easy to differentiate from a true morel.

I ended up making a morel pork loin sauce with asperagus. It turned out really good, here's the recipe i used. https://www.williams-sonoma.com/m/recipe/roasted-pork-loin-with-morel-sauce.html

Fantastic photos and really great information! It's great to see photos of other mushrooms that might be mistaken for morels.

Yeah you definitely need to know the lookalikes. The verpa morels are tricky as they look the most like true morels. Most don't have too much toxin and it cooks out but i don't like to take chances.

I am probably far too cautious and have likely passed by perfectly edible mushrooms because they didn't look exactly perfect!

Better safe than sorry, i ate old chicken of the woods once and it was like chewing a sponge.

I have always wished that I felt more confident identifying all of them.

Home destroyer!
But you are forgiven. You brought food. And it looks really good!

By the way. I have never seen those myself. Pretty ones.

I may have accidentally eaten a few millipedes over the years. The like to eat their way up into chantrelles.

The morel pork loin sauce with asperagus sounds and looks absolutely delicious...!!!!!!
I have not yet found any morels. This Spring has been very very cool this year here.I searched an area where there was alot of Mayapples growing but no luck.

Its tricky most these morels were hiding under a bunch of weeds i had a stick with me to brush around them and would have never found them without brushing aside the weeds. I definitely recommend that recipe for morels i might try it on pasta next.

You live in fungi paradise. I've found first and only morel in my life this April.

Hopefully you'll find more, the key is to look near dead trees and old stumps.

I came for the "loofah" shrooms and stay for the food! hahaha

They do look like sponges. I highly recommend that recipe it would work with most any kind of mushroom but really brings out the flavor of the morels.
