Fungi Friday - Chicago Pizza um, Peziza
Here's some Chicago style Peziza I found for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw
This was growing in a planter next to the Tribune building. Peziza is a cup fungi that likes to feed off dead wood mostly in the ground.
Here's a view of the surrounding, you can see the Wrigley building in the background.
Later in suburbia i found a giant puffball.
Here's my hand for scale. Too bad this was too old to take home.
Another one was growing right next to it. If only I found them a week earlier it would have been a good meal and I could have dried the rest for later. Happy #fungifriday :-]

And my oh my... that puffball is ginormous!
Yeah i could have made pizza crust out of it, but the inside was starting to spore. Missed out on a major score.

I always enjoyed finding puffballs back on the farm, never ate one tho...was in the horse pasture lol.
Yeah i wouldn't trust a horse pasture one lol. They taste really good if you get them early.

Great post, that is a huge puffball. I have become a student of fungi lately. I am working on identifying all the different mushrooms here in Upstate Ny.
Wish me luck, I just hope I don't poison myself.
Just stick to the easy ones. Hen of the woods, chicken of the woods, oysters, chantrelles and morels. Lions mane is easy too id as well. There's edible white grass mushrooms here but i stay away from them just in case they might be deathcaps.

hey, amazing pics this round (as always!)
the size of puffball is amazing, max of I've ever encountered was 5sm, but this......
I finally coming to couclusion you're living in a mushroom anomaly! today's pics look like your city suffered an alien shroom invasion!
I love finding the giant ones. Lots of ways to cook them, you can even powder them and mix it with flour in bread. This area is definitely overrun with alien mushrooms. Still i wish more alien boletes would show up around here.

the mushroom powder, what qualities does it adds to the flour / to the bread? very curious.
ps. today i've gathered some spores of the ink caps, and seeded them on a lawn near my house :P will see next year, what happens...
The early settlers used it to stretch out flour in the winter. It acts just like flour and adds a bit of the mushroom flavor to the bread. Only problem is if you use too much then it smells bad while its baking. Kind of a sour pungent smell.

Good luck on the inkcaps, hope they find something to eat in the lawn.

The peziza is an interesting looking mushroom. I don't think I've seen anything like it before.
That is one huge puffball! You better bring a Geiger counter next time you go to that place. Make sure there's no radioactive material leaking from somewhere. :-D
I've come across puffballs during my walks in the local trails, but they're maybe the size of a golf ball.
I think the golfball sized ones are Lycoperdon perlatum. They are edible as well but you need to find a lot of them. The giant puffball mushrooms are good for a couple meals.
