Welcome to another marvelous Monday! What is so marvelous about it? It is another great beginning and beginnings are always full of potential and wonderful things waiting to happen. One of those things is a project that we will promote to you today. It is an innovative project about building a solar-powered computer lab in Guatemala by @appropriatetech.

Cipresales is an isolated community that is hours away from the nearest electrical pole, medical clinic, and the marketplace. With no possibility of connecting to the electrical grid, people miss out on modern communications, news and market information. This leaves young people economically marginalized for generations to come. This project recognizes solar power as the solution to both health and productivity problems. Candles and kerosene lamps cause people respiratory damage and there is a great productivity increase when you actually have enough light to work. The objective of this project is to provide the 840 un-electrified rural villagers with access to electricity and a computer lab to reduce the economic and social isolation of their growing population. 140 families, 180 school children, and 7 teachers will directly benefit from the village’s first electrified building offering a publicly accessible charge station enabling parents to charge their cell phones and lanterns while children are in class.

The plan is to install 490 watts of solar power and a small computer lab at Cipresales Public School. A local woman entrepreneur offers free training on the importance of health, economic and environmental improvements that come from investing in small-scale solar power, a water filter, and eco-stoves at home and in public spaces. She also provides access to affordable solutions through nonprofit and social enterprise partners. Rural communities can now engage in modern communications and green technologies.

Solar electricity will also enable the school to host evening meetings and public events, increasing nighttime productivity in the home and in a public space. Children will have improved lighting to read by and study, projectors and music in their classroom will be a great addition too. Computers will be given to grades 4-6 to provide basic training in computer skills that include typing and internet research. The productivity of teachers and schools administrators is expected to improve significantly since they will now have access to more educational materials.

Here is what this project needs:

  • Desks & Chairs for Computer Lab; Secure Doors & Windows for anti-theft; Feed and host work team and volunteers, Write a maintenance funding plan overseen by a recognized committee, Designate a savings account for a maintenance fund.
  • $1,200 for solar panels & inverter
  • $4,000 for technical staff & solar batteries
  • Donated Laptop Computers

You can donate funds on Fundition and if you have any materials, laptops or other needed things, please contact the founder directly and arrange all the details.

The project is still in it early stage and every bit of your help will be greatly appreciated. They have organized their plans into 3 main activity groups:

Train 10 community leaders to

  • prepare for the collaborative solar installation
  • understand the capacity and maintenance protocol of this self-managed energy solution
  • be empowered to install their own small-scale solar power system at home

Solar Installation

  • Lights & Electrical Outlets in Classrooms and Community Meeting Space
  • Power for 10-12 laptop computers
  • Power for PA systems and projectors

Computer Lab Installation and connection to internet modem

THERE ARE BACKER REWARDS!

Depending on your level of donation, there are 4 backer rewards you can choose from. 4 different calendars to remind you that your lovely donation helped change the life of an entire community.

Mayan Power and Light is a self-sustaining development model that starts up women’s social enterprises who ‘pay it forward’ by training others and selling affordable life-saving technologies in needing regions. This empowers not only women but entire communities to learn and work on getting their lives better, easier, and more enjoyable. This sustainable local economy is inclusive to women, indigenous, rural and low-income people. Everyone is welcome and everyone will get access to affordable and appropriate technologies to improve health and economic productivity. This project does everything that Fundition promotes and stands for. It is building the Future right now, today. Open your hearts and donate. Your actions will have a long-lasting impact on people and their lives.

And there we are talking... Making a change in peoples lives with the power of the blockchain <3

This is really wonderful to see that we finally appreciate what nature has been providing for us, free clean energy that can be tapped to be widely used necessary.

This reminded me the project Billions in change where what they are doing for India to be self sustainable.

Places like Malaysia is so blessed to the point that many are very spoiled to the core and crumbles are the slight of adversity; while these people are stepping out into a great adventure (with great responsibility)

Years back I was interrested in this sort of solutions. I wanted to make solarpowered waterwells in afrika. there is an organisation who dows this kind of solution country wide. they are also specialised in this kind of solutions I wil search the organisation maybe they can help this project also. Maybe to help extra solarpanels on the school for charging batteries at the school for the houses in the town. That was also a solution. they use dieselgenerator to charge batteries but that depletes the batteries. sunpower will not. I will look for the organisation now.

The organisation was called picosol and they were busy in cambodia they worked together with solarenergy assosyation cambodia they have build a lot of projects round the country and they had setup a course for children and als for men/women to work with solarpanels. When they got the degree they could install solarpanels with waterwells etc. The website of picosol is down one of their ideas was the tournesol this is the only thing I could find online but there was schoolmaterial online on that website so I thought you could use it or some of it for your project. I will try to get in touch with them tomorrow there is a dutch number I can call.
