In orthopedic surgery as in many specialties there are different types of surgical procedures, depending on how invasive it is necessary to be, certain instruments will be needed to perform surgeries. Even some procedures, if necessary, will be treated simultaneously, i.e. the performance of two surgeries at the same time. Orthopedic Surgery and traumatology is the specialty that deals with the study, development, preservation and restoration of the shape and function of the extremities, the spine and its associated structures, by medical, surgical and physical means.

Orthopedic surgery and traumatology consists of replacing a worn, arthritic joint, which hurts and prevents normal life, with a prosthesis, using minimally invasive techniques, modern implants and blood recovery systems, which have been used regularly for years.

Currently, through the great development that occurred during the twentieth century, the specialty has taken an incalculable momentum through the possibilities of recovery offered to patients who suffer increasingly frequent trauma of greater proportions. In addition, the increase in the average life span of people translates into a greater number of degenerative and disabling osteoarticular lesions. Thus, in the second half of this century, joint replacement surgery, spinal surgery, surgical management of fractures through different osteosynthesis techniques, reconstructive surgery, etc., have reached a great development, promising in the future a great surgical medical activity in the improvement of patients affected by a pathology of the locomotor system.

In traumatology, the most common types of surgery are:

• Open surgery: this is traditional surgery. Through a cut made in the skin and tissues, access is gained to the structures on which you want to work. The surgeon works on the exposed lesion, being able to carry out the necessary manipulations to solve it with a direct vision of it.

• Minimally invasive surgery: in this case, large cuts are avoided and, through very small incisions, devices are introduced that allow the surgeon to observe the area to be intervened on a monitor. With this image and manipulating other devices from the outside, he can explore and operate on the injured area.

By damaging the tissues less with the incisions and being the wounds less exposed to the outside, the risk of infections is greatly reduced, being the recovery of the patient much faster and less annoying.

• Percutaneous surgery: this is a type of minimally invasive surgery that allows operations to be performed with very small incisions. In order to do this, it is necessary to maintain radiological control throughout the operation, so that the surgeon can guide his movements through this image. It is frequently applied in foot interventions.

• Microsurgery: in this type of surgery it is necessary for the surgeon to use a microscope to perform the operation. The microscope is used so that the doctor can see and manipulate very small structures, or that are in extremely delicate areas, and that need great precision in their handling.

Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages, so they cannot be used indistinctly. Each pathology has its own surgical technique and what may be good for one case may be contraindicated for another.

Therefore, since we do not have the necessary knowledge to choose, it should be the surgeons who decide which is the best technique to use in each intervention.
