Optical Spectacles

Optical spectacle, spectacles or simply put glasses are made by opticians with the help of the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist after refraction and administered to patients for purposes of correction of refractive errors, protection from ultra violet rays, aesthetics, etc. Lot of individuals and cultures have lots of myths regarding spectacle use which prevent them from its patronage whereas others especially those who may be new to it may find it comfortable at first, hence the importance in enlightening the masses on the significance of its administration and how best one can go about coping easier.

Due to the varied preferences of patients spectacles come in different sizes, shapes, styles and frames (it may be wooden, plastic or metal). The most common frames are that of the metal and plastic ones, they are relatively less costly than the wood frames. Metal frames are light to wear, easier to adjust with patient and fit however there in the chance of corrosion which may cause a reaction with the skin. Plastic frames are also light to wear and come in variety of bright colors which patients may select based on their preference in combination with their favorite colors or choice of attire however it become brittle with time and may break easily.

Fitting of spectacles depend mainly on the patient comfort and vision gained, Optometrists always keep in mind that without adequate comfort for the patient, he or she will not wear it. Then also there are patients who put aesthetics first above all else, unless they spectacles do compliment them in terms of color and face shape etc they may not wear it, thus it becomes important that all these options are explored. The problem sometimes lies with identifying what is most important to the patient as some patients feel some apprehension when they have to go for their choice or option at the clinic. If you are such a patient it is important you know that we are there for your sake and as such you should always feel free to talk to your doctor about what you want that way we will be able to help you better. Do not buy spectacles from any source without recommendation from your doctor.

Some Important Information for Patients
Your spectacle power may or may not change after a year or two, it is recommended that you go in for a checkup after using your spectacles for a maximum of two years. Spectacles ought to be worn as taught by your optometrist as measurements were taken based on how you wore the trial frame at the clinic, adjusting it any other way may change the effective power of the lens making it either more powerful or less powerful. If you notice you need to bring you spectacles more forward to your nose or closer to your eyes before you can see better as you used to it is an indication that your error power has changed and as such you require a new set of lenses. Visit your optometrist. Cleaners in your spectacle case ought to be washed when they get dirty that way you do not add more dirt to your lenses when you have to clean it. If you have any additional symptoms aside what you went to the clinic with for your spectacle administration report it to your optometrist immediately.

What is @bettervision about?

@bettervision is is a project initiated by @nattybongo and friends to give back to the society the knowledge and skill acquired through the Optometric Studies in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.It is an outreach system where we visit the less privileged communities to offer free eye screening services and education to the people within the community

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To reduce or prevent vision loss through diseases such as glaucoma, cataract and refractive errors.

To enlighten the majority of the Ghanaian population about the importance of proper visual care.

To conscientize people on the need for regular eye checks

To get more people to have their wards screened within the Critical periods of a Child’s Vision Development; thus from ages 3 to till about 10 years.

To help the blind and people with low vision live a better life within the society through education of the general public to stop stigmatization.

To help in the fight of extreme poverty that puts the health of people at risk
