Photos from the orgnic farm: promtoing decentralized food supply & sustainability in Lombok

In 'the garden' is what the locals call the area of land which they farm are plots of land allocated to each family. Channels of water flow down from the mountain (rinjani) that is often covered with cloud at some point in the day even during the dry season months, allowing a fresh supply of running water. Though rainfall has decreased somewhat due to deforestation, one reason that re-planting trees is so important there right now as well.

We were really keen to plant quite a few fruit trees on the farm, some of these trees will take 5 years or maybe more to grow. We saved the seeds from sweet orange mangoes and other types of local fruit that we were eating whilst we were there

we brought butternut squash seeds with us from spain

theres was cassava growing organically on the land which has now been harvested

Banana trees were also well established on the land but we are also looking to get as many varieties as possible to create a banana orchard

we've planted sunflowers for the seeds & their beauty

This is chickpea plants, we just planted the beans we brought from an organic packet, chickpeas are not being grown locally

One advantage of Adi's land is that it's raised up & therefore dry meaning pesticides will not be running in the water and leaching into the soil from the other 'wet' land farms producing rice. This is why we need to build a well on the land so we can continue to water the plants during the dry season.

Awesome garden... nearly makes me jealous. Especially the bananas... What a gift.

I know bananas are so good, a very sustainable crop, they produce fruit quickly and after that chop them down and 10 more grow back!
