The Precious Egg: Toy Idea

in #fun7 years ago (edited)

I have this idea for a toy. It might be stupid but maybe someone will see it the way I see it and think it’s cool or fun or interesting. I have no means of creating it so maybe someone will take it upon themselves to do that as well.

So the idea is that the toy is extremely fragile, breakable and sensitive - much like an egg or glass object. If it is hit, dropped, or jostled too hard, the toy “breaks.” Not an actual break but a more of a symbolic break - like a mechanism inside of the toy breaks rather than the toy itself shattering. Just something to let you know that you failed to protect your toy.

The idea is a bit silly and maybe even stupid but remember, at one point in time “pet rocks” were a thing (rocks with googly eyes glued to them) and also, how many fidget spinners were sold last year?

You might be asking, why not just carry around a real egg? Well, the egg may rot, or make a mess if it breaks but the biggest factor has to do with mindset. People won't take the challenge seriously if they don't have an investment in the idea. Simply paying money for something changes a persons views and attitudes toward it and makes it more valuable - something to be taken seriously. It changes the persons mindset from a silly concept to a real challenge. So there needs to be some investment in the object in order to make the idea work.

Break Mechanism

I don’t want the egg/toy to actually break. I want the break to be symbolic. For instance, maybe the egg is made of clear plastic and filled with two differently colored liquids that are separated by a thin film. When the egg is mistreated, the film within the egg breaks and the liquids combine and change color.

(ex. Red on one side of the film and blue on the other. When the film breaks, the colors mix to become purple and the purple indicator lets you know that you failed).

That’s just one idea for a simple breaking mechanism but it could be done in a variety of different ways. Maybe there is a filament inside that cracks or maybe it’s electronic and an actual message is displayed. It just needs to have a clear warning that your egg is broken or dead or that you failed.

There could be different additions and styles and also different challenge levels. Maybe for young kids the device is electronic and there is actually a reset mechanism. Maybe its a type of clock that tells you how long you've kept your object safe. Maybe for seasoned veterans there are versions that are a "onetime shot" – you break it and it’s done.
Various strengths or challenge levels could also be a thing. Low impact devices vs. high impact devices.

What’s the Point

The point is that you have to take care of your toy, protect it and cherish it. This is not a toy that you want to damage it is something that you take pride in. It is an accomplishment. Something to show off to your friends or to brag about.

“I’ve had my egg for three months now and it’s still not broken. You broke yours in two days.”

The longer you have your toy the more precious it becomes. Maybe after a few months of carrying it around and protecting it, you no longer want to risk the chance of breaking it, your investment is now a little too high to mess around with this willy-nilly, so you put it on a shelf in your house under a glass protector. Hahaha I don't know - maybe?

So that’s my toy idea. What do you think? Is it stupid or does it sound fun?
