Tales from the Tickle Trunk: Corsets and Boot Lust

in #fun7 years ago (edited)

No, the title didn’t say "blood lust," and we’re not talking about that kind of lust. We're talking about the coveting of fabulous clothing and footwear.

I’ve been bringing my costumes out more often, and came up with this idea of adding a series to my blog called “Tales from the Tickle Trunk,” tickle trunk being a word for a bin filled with costumes and fun things to wear.

Unfortunately, much of the clothing sold on runways and bargain racks is all “meh” to me. It actually depresses me—I’ve spent more than one occasion eating up hours of time looking for clothes that feel good and look good, with nothing to show for my searching.

What I love the most about fashion is there’s something for everyone, and it’s an incredible way to express yourself. The way you dress can alter the way you feel. As Stasia Savasuk explains in her TED Talk, “Dressing for Confidence and Joy,” when you wear clothes that are congruent with who you are on the inside, it can change the way you approach life.

Stasia Savasuk TED Talk — Dressing for Confidence and Joy

In this video, Stasia invites us to ask, “Who am I, and how do I want to show up in the world?”

You do you.

^^ I’m big on those three words.

If I could dress for a music festival or Renaissance Faire every day, that would make me fabulously happy.

Why not do it?

Really, why not? There are, of course, the days I don’t want to get out of pajamas. That’s one of the perks of being a stay-at-home mom, so yay! But that can get depressing if done too much, so I bring out my tickle trunk. And though it’s nice to dress up for yourself, it’s way more fun to show it off!

Here I am in my new corset, a see-thru shirt I got at a clothing swap, a gorgeous purple skirt I purchased from a clothing-designer friend (check out her work at Arwen’s Apparel), and a belly dance hip-skirt thing that makes music when I shake my booty. ;)

The outfit is Toby-cat approved.

Corsets and Boots: Two of my Favourite Things.

I’ve always loved boots, but after falling down a rabbit hole that started as research for a manuscript, I have a renewed interest in corsets. Yeah, corsets.

I was actually searching for historical evidence of how uncomfortable corsets must’ve been, and ended up reading an FAQ on a website that said no, corsets can actually be quite comfortable, help you have better posture, and train your waist. Then I found photos of corsets for sale, and suddenly I was shopping. Sucked right in.

I see the point about waist training and better posture when I wear a corset. It’s not like I’m going to magically get my belly to look like it did before I had kids—sadly, that’s never gonna happen. What does happen, is my abdominal muscles remember to work like they’re supposed to in order to hold my torso in an upright, non-slouched position, and when I take the corset off, they look more toned. This goes away, of course, but I can see the benefits of wearing them.

And, surprisingly, when I have one on and it’s not laced up too tight, I don’t want to take it off. Nor do I want to stop looking at myself in the mirror. ;)

Dreaming of Gipsy Dharma boots.

Moving on to one of my other fashion passions: BOOTS!

I’ve been lusting after Gipsy Dharma's handmade, lace-up leather boots for years now. They’re out of my current price range, but that doesn’t stop me from checking the website every other week or so, waiting for the day I can rock these sexy-earthy boots.

Being leather, I'm thinking these conform to the shape of your body and start to feel like home after wearing them a while. One day I will have a pair, but until then I’ll stay subscribed to their mailing list (where I get tantalizing deals like buy-one-pair, get-one-free, or $100 off), and keep dreaming of getting some of my own.

I want the thigh-high ones, and several other pair. Badly. I can imagine myself singing through the forest in these, dancing at a music festival, or prancing around my living room if I can’t get my kids out of the house. ;)

What say you?

By now you’ve figured out that my fashion taste is fun, feminine, a little flashy, earthy and ethereal like a fairy. What about you, what’s your style?

Would you enjoy reading more “Tales from the Tickle Trunk?” Please let me know if you want me to model more costumes, write about them, and share my favourite designers.

Thanks for visiting my blog. Hope it made you smile. ;)

Whatever happens, keep singing your song!

Peace. @katrina-ariel

two thumbs up. Would definitely enjoy reading more about your fashion choices. I used to have a Tickle Trunk too for models to look through for photography sessions. It was fun. I felt like wearing a costume or a mask helped models be more comfortable with who they were or chose to show me and the camera.
You keep doing you.
Hugs.

I can totally see costumes help people feel more comfortable. Thank you for the sweet comment. Big hugs back! :)

What a joyful post! How just wonderful to see and hear you express your joy at this clothing. Made my heart smile.

My clothing is blue jeans and T Shirts. I'm a serious form follows function guy, and like Deets from Lonesome Dove "am not prone to give up on an item of clothing just due to a little wear". I have TShirts from the 80s.

Mine would be riding clothes. I have boots, I have jackets and pants and helmets and gloves all with the nod toward safety and function. Right now, in my living room, I have two helmets hanging (they pass as art in my house), two pair of gloves (more than that actually, my well worn selection is hidden behind a speaker) and my primary jacket. Ready to wear :)

Thanks for a delightful share. I really appreciate it.

YES! Riding clothes are the bomb. Also, t-shirts that are soft from years of wear are also the best. Thank you for reading and leaving such a kind comment. The joy is real. ;)

Corsets and Boots: Two of my Favourite Things.

(Privately wondering if you're a dominatrix at heart.)

Maybe it comes off that way, but I really don't think so... I just like dressing up. If anything, I'd be more on the submissive side. That was probably TMI. ;) sighs... saunters off to play with costumes

I have always thought you are very pretty, which of course you are. Then I saw Toby-cat. That is one fine puddy.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

He's a handsome one, for sure. ;) Thank you!!!

I totally get it. I haven't gotten fit enough to reach the re-wardrobing stage yet, but I started with the hair. The dreads. They reflect my personality much better than the granny bun I've been wearing for so long. Totally changes my attitude, my confidence level, and the spring in my step. I'm stunned at how differently people respond to me, too. My hair makes a statement about who I am on the inside. And I love it when people connect with that.

Those dreads are awesome! Love them. So amazing how changing our appearance can change everything else. Keep being you! :)

You look super hot in that corset @katrina-ariel!! And I love that you let go of some of that inhibition and decided to share this with us. I think women and men alike always enjoy a little eye candy.

Unfortunately I don't have a tickle trunk but I do love to play dress up from time to time and not only do I like the corsets and boots and long broom skirts I also love the vintage pin-up style and actually have a couple of really cute pin-up style dresses.

I'm proud of you love. You're gorgeous. I look forward to seeing more posts like this!!

Absolutely – you do you, girl! If it makes you feel good, that's really what matters most. <3

As a clothing designer, I'm more than a little bit familiar with the 'meh' feeling one gets whilst rummaging through racks and racks of borrrriinnng. Most clothes simply cover up and conceal.

My clothes embrace a woman's shape, accentuating and celebrating her curves; I want my customers to feel like I'm hugging them every time they wear one of my designs. I'm pretty sure you'd love my jackets. ;) Maybe we can get you into one someday. <3

Annnd....I happen to have a pair of boots not so unlike the ones you covet. They cost me a damn fortune, and I LOVE THEM, but they're really quite a pain to get into. I suppose I didn't think about the difficulty of side laces with a fused spine. Oops. Still, the first time I wore them (while photographing Envision Festival in Costa Rica) they were a HUGE hit. Combined with my sexy OneZ jumper, I definitely felt like some kind of superhero! LOL!

not the best pic, but...found one that shows my fancy boots AND OneZ jumper!

You're amazing, thank you for finding this picture and for constantly encouraging me to be who I am! Those Gipsy Dharma boots at least have a side zipper, but they'd still take some lacing to get the fit right the first time or two. As for your clothing, could you please drop a link here so I (and others) can check out your clothes? Pretty please? Maybe I can feature them on "Tales from the Tickle Trunk" one day soon. ;)

Ooh!! LOL! Clearly not very good at promoting my stuff. Perhaps that's 'cause I've been trying to retire my line for quite a while now. I just don't have the bandwidth to run an entire second business.

When I started designing, it was quite by accident and I had no idea how much work I was creating for myself. It should've been a good thing that people responded so well to my designs, but I was surprised and more than a little bit overwhelmed. Lesson learned. (This is reminding me that I never published the third/final installment of 'The Accidental Designer'. Maybe I should do that!)

You can have a look-see at Wear Zipporah. <3

Yes, you should definitely publish that! I remember reading about your clothing and would love to hear more. Thanks for dropping this link, you sexy, wonderful woman, you!

First, I whole-heartedly thank you for the boob shot. 😍 Those are sexy!

I LOVE your chosen outfit of the day! (And that kitty is so big and fluffy! I wanna cuddle it!)

I'm with you on this: You do you. Though I do tend to look in the mirror before leaving the house and giggle...as I do NOT dress my age. 😉 More like a college student, at best. And that's probably because I've not bought myself any clothing since then... LOL!

I have fun dress up stuff, too! But... no so organized to have it all in one trunk. #lifegoals

I'm excited to see more of your dress up adventures. Maybe (very big maybe) it will inspire me to do the same. 😎

Well! Thank you, my dear! I’m thrilled to hear you enjoyed the boob shot. 😘 I won’t pretend to be organized enough to have all my fun stuff in one trunk, but I figured it was a good title anyway. 😁 As for cuddling the kitty, Toby would be thrilled. He’s a super affectionate cat, and really just wanted me to stop taking pictures and pick him up already. 🤣

Thanks for the lovely comment and letting me know you’d like more Tales from the Tickle Trunk. I would LOVE to see you bring out some costumes and show them off, too!

True story. Thank you for being YOU! :)

Boobies... Yeah, that first photo is gorgeous honey, you look simply amazing!
The best thing you have in your closet are those green boots you both at a fair last year, you know which ones I am talking about 💚

Well thank you! So glad you like the picture, and I really appreciate the compliment. 💞💝🤗 As for those green boots, I’ll bring them out and show them off soon! 💚
