Rich in antioxidants
Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, including flavonoids and chlorogenic acid, which help protect your body from free radical damage. Coffee also contains magnesium, potassium, niacin and choline, and is a good source of vitamin B2 or riboflavin.

Improves mood
Women who regularly drank caffeinated coffee, were 20 percent more likely to get depressed than those who drank little or nothing, the Harvard researchers say. This may be due to "good feelings" because of the chemicals dopamine and serotonin released by caffeine into the brain.

Reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes
Recent research shows that drinking 3-4 cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 25 percent. It is believed to be due to chlorogenic acid and trigonelline in coffee which gives a pleasant aroma and helps to increase insulin sensitivity.

Then how to maximize the benefits of coffee?

Know the limit
Experts recommend consuming 300 - 400 mg of caffeine per day for healthy adults. "That's about three espresso or five cups of instant coffee," explained diet expert Kate Gudorf, who is also a spokesman for an association of nutritionists from Australia. "If it's more than that, it may be able to get rid of the benefits, and you get angry, anxious, headache and sleep disorders, which can have negative consequences for your health."

Notice the additions
Adding "flavorings" such as sugar, whipped cream, and flavored syrups (such as caramel or hazelnut) will not reduce the health benefits of coffee, Gudorf says, but it can increase the size of your waistline. "You will still be consuming antioxidants, but with added sugars and saturated fats," he said. "For example, a full-fat latte with one teaspoon of sugar three times a day can contain as much saturated fat as a burger."

Choose instant coffee if high cholesterol
Coffee contains cafestol and kahweol, oils that increase bad cholesterol levels. Coffee making methods using paper or fine metal filters will remove the oil. The Heart Foundation recommends that people with cholesterol problems better drink coffee that has been filtered than coffee that has not been filtered. So, drink instant coffee, or coffee made with an espresso machine.

Try dark roast if the stomach is sensitive
Dark roasted coffee, or roasted coffee with very high temperatures, will eliminate unwanted coffee flavors, such as acid levels. However, the uniqueness of coffee flavor can be reduced. That is why, the quality of dark roast coffee is often said to be under light roast coffee. It's just that dark roast coffee may be more "friendly" to the stomach because it contains substances that help to reduce the sour taste, say researchers from Austria and Germany. This type of coffee also contains less caffeine. If you feel a little heartburn, choose caffe latte aka milk coffee alone, because milk can help relieve heartburn.
