FRUITS & VEGGIES MONDAY by @lenasveganliving - The Mayom Thai Fruit.
There are many types of lucky trees in Thailand and Thai people believe that a Mayom tree (Star Gooseberry) planted in front of the house will bring fame and success. When i first come across this beautiful elegant tall standing tree in Thailand, to me it resemble sacred spiritual gold nugget tree and in actual fact it turned out to be known as a tree of luck and good fortune. Apart from the beautiful unusual fruit it bears the monks use the branches for blessing and the branches and fruit are also used in medical researches. Also this tree bears a yummy fruit that can be preserved and eaten in many different ways.
How the Mayom branches are used by monks they dip them in consecrated water and sprinkle on people, cars motorbikes and house as a sort of ritual purification to rid of all the bad spirits and bring them good luck and fortune.
The fruit is very acidic but can be preserved in syrup which is more of a delight to eat but if you like a sour taste then eat the Mayom as is without preservatives this will get your skin cringing. It has become a popular snack in the country, especially when dipped in a spicy chili sauce. The Mayom fruit is also pickled in sugar and chili and sold in jars within Thailand, which preserves its sour taste and freshness.
It is also cultivated for its medicinal properties including the treatment of fevers accompanied by a skin disease, e.g. the measles.
The plant sits majestically in between being a tree and a shrub, which can grow from 2 to 9 meters in height. It is very common for Mayom trees to be grown in front yards of Thai peoples homes manly because they believe in the fortune and luck of this tree and they can pick the fruit at random when it's ripe and ready to eat or pickle.
