Wild fruits again - Wild medlar

in #fruit8 years ago

The word medlar is an older English word for apples although to me, this tree's fruit taste like dried plum sweets that you can buy from Asian groceries: not too sweet and a little like guava. Not many of the trees bore fruit this year and I notice that a fair amount of the fruit on them has gotten a fungus. I suspect that is because the rains were late this year and then it was wetter than usual. This is another fruit that has more seed than fruit flesh but what is useful about these fruits is that they dry on the tree and can be picked and stored and reconstituted by soaking in water for a few hours

These trees are very slow growing and fairly small and stunted but they survive at all in this environment by their ability to grow in among the rocks, which protect them from fire. The seeds germinate fairly easily but there aren't many of them growing on the hill because of the regular fires experienced here. The area where they grow has some fairly large slabs of rock that act as a firebreak

Medlar tree leaves often have extremely odd-looking growths on their leaves, which is caused by a mite and is quite odd to see.

This tree is well-known all over South Africa and today I met one of the people who live in the next road. She has seen me wandering around picking fruit and asked how I get access to the area, as she recognised the tree as something that grows in her home village in another province and would like to pick some fruit, too. I like the thought that the fruit isn't just going to waste.

Sort:

medlar fruit. we never knew this fruit.
probably in #Aceh the fruit is not there.

Probably not, it is an African tree

I can only give moral and verbal support because i have 2.5 days to weight for full steem power. Ah have to learn somehow. Thanks for info i learnt a lot.

The first tree looks like ficus lirrata.
The second picture is bizarre, once again haven't seen anything like it.

No worries, only 39 hours to go now. Did you check your voting power on the steemblock explorer link I gave you? After that, 10 votes a day only until you get your slider.

The leaves and fruit are a bit like ficus but this tree is part of the gardenia family

yes thanks. I love gardenias

Oh my, those growth on the leaves makes me feel like taking them off for the tree

That would just make the leaves full of little holes. Pests attack a plant severely if growing conditions aren't ideal and the plant is stressed.

Very cool how the fruit regenerates in water. Yes, those are some very strange looking mites. Looks like some kind of experiment. 🐓🐓

thanks for sharing this information @nikv
kindly upvote me

the fruit is similar to figs, nice post

It is very different from our medlar. Those from here have a shell like fine sandpaper and could never be reconstituted after ripening.
Nature always offers its wonders.
Greetings @nikv.

Goodness, me...what a fascinating story this is...I had no idea...and this is the first time I hear of medlar fruit...wow...thank you for sharing this interesting info :)

I've learned something today, thanks to you. This is the first time I see this fruit.
