What Kind of Seed are You?

You’ve probably never been asked this question. Usually, analogies for people and personalities are in relation to animals or big things, rarely with the little pods that are nestled in fruit. So obviously this makes for a juicy little blog post.

Before we dive into explaining this saying and analogy commonly used in Korea, close you eyes and picture different types of fruit seeds. There are of course ones embedded at the core of an apple - black, crunchy, and casually spit out onto the grass. The Onnes for a strawberry are dotted on the outside of the fruit, too small to even notice when chewing. Melons and cantaloupes have slimy ones inn the center, like a hive burrowed in the middle opening.

Then there’s the mango. If you’ve ever prepared or eaten a mango whole, you know what the seed is like - big, unavoidable, straightforward. There’s no hiding a mango seed, which usually constitutes up to half of the mango’s mass and is always happy to stop your knife or teeth in their tracks.

You can see how this easily applies to individual personalities. Mangos have none of the sneakiness or unexpectedness of other types of fruits. No anterior motives and no surprises. You know the seed is there and its plain as day. Koreans use the phrase “망고 씨 같아” (It/He/She’s like a mango seed) in an almost pleasant and amusing way, pointing out those clear and unobscure qualities. Sometimes ‘mango’ is replaced by ‘avocado’ because… well… you know.
