These guys can become huge

source

I saw one of the killed on the road home from work yesterday and realized a couple of steemians may be interested in a South African frog series as we have many interesting ones.

So why not start with the largest and most impressive.

The adults will eat anything that moves, rats and even snakes if they can capture them. They are also highly cannibalistic. It is because of their rich protein diets that they can become so large.

They dig themselves into the soil and create a mucus cocoon during the dry season, only to emerge with the first rains, but that is not all they use their digging skills for.

As a child we had them where I grew up and one of my earliest memories is of trying to kiss one (I think it was a dare... that part is not so clear) but it latched onto my thumb and left it a bloodied mess after having to shake it off.

Sort:

you should hear the noise they make...

a gigant ....wow***

Great post. Nearly jumped out of my skin when I watched the first video but then again you did say they will eat anything that moves

As pets, its difficult to keep them fed, they are a bottomless pit and end up costing you a fortune... best left to fend for themselves in the wild.

It is a shame that they are endangered now, and children of the future might not share stories of them :(

Too much breeding ground habitat loss and vehicles on roads.

and lets not forget too many inconsiderate humans as well!

Not that cool though, when its shredded your finger... for being stupid.

Holy Crap!! That is a DinoFrog

yup, they are BIG but I don't think the largest worldwide

They're pretty close, but the largest is the goliath frog. The largest ever was a species called beelzebufo, which is believed to have fed on baby dinos in a pinch!

Looks big. Are they edible? As in do people cook them and eat?

I'm sure they are edible, but since they have always had a very limited range and are now endangered I don't think that is too much of an issue. They are generally in more danger of being eaten by a larger individual of their own kind than anything else.

OK, endangered is no good. Need to safe them.
I was asking because i know we have frog farming in Singapore.

thanks for the link...

you're welcome

Couldn't they be farmed or something? Like start a bullfrog breeding program?

Something that big and that reproduces so prolifically would make good eating. Also it's good pest control. Food and an extermination service in one species.

Woooooooooow ))))))
