Carving Out A Friendship

I hate people. Not you. I mean those other people. Maybe “hate” is a strong word. I should say dislike. No, not even that. It's just that some people really annoy and disappoint me.

You know how you think you have a great friendship with someone, but then you discover they have a bad spot somewhere under the surface, kind of like a potato? You try to cut it out but by the time it’s gone, there really isn’t much left of what you thought you had. And, unbeknownst to you, while you are carving on their bad spots, they are also carving on yours, so in the end, neither of you ends up with much.

And there’s my point. Ultimately, we must decide if those flaws are tolerable annoyances, or if they represent such deep and disturbing vacuums of civility that we must toss the friendship, altogether. We must also keep in mind that if we toss out every potato that has a bad spot, we might find a sparse supper set before us.

Sometimes we just have to accept potatoes, I mean people, for who they are and hope they will do the same for us.
