Seeking new friends

I have been reading for a while about how Steemit works. There are some communities and tags as I understand. Maybe somebody could explain me which is the fastest and the easiest way to get noticed here and make more friends. Is the only way to write comments or should I concentrate on creating useful content instead? Or following a lot of people? Or doing it all together at the same time? Maybe there are some secrets how to become a whale ))
