I’ve experienced

in #friend5 years ago

A friend posted a comment to me on reddit asking if I was suspicious of chatbot language. I was curious about whether it was a bot that I’d unwittingly prompted. I had a friend ask me about it — and he had posted the following image to the thread:
What do you think about all this talk about people who open up an “interest” of his or her “interest”, and that is then used to set up a chatbot?
Without realizing it, they were actually trying to extract information from someone. Let’s face it, many people who become bot-like are more likely to take advantage of chatbots than bebot-like individuals.
Not only can these bots go beyond a few seconds to act on a server’s request, but the system can also monitor your and your family’s contact list to determine if you are interested in the chatbot — as well as other activities (e.g. liking Facebook posts, linking to sites, or just viewing YouTube videos).
This type of bot traffic can be a lure for some people — and for many, it’s a dream.
Whichever the case may be, it sounds like my friend might not have known of the scam he had engaged in. Neither does the Bot Automation Blog. This tactic, coined “doppelganger persistence”, is a phishing attempt, in which the person issuing a response is then compromised to forge an additional request. Many users fall for it.
Below is a screenshot of two looks from the bot:
This was obviously one of the bots most targeted by the scammer. This is why I call this type of bot, Doppelganger persistence, “opinions-phishing”. I will sum it up as “a barrage of individual phishing attempts sent by people to make it look like all that’s happened is you replied to someone’s post in the chatbot”. A message sent to someone in the chatbot with a 2 to it (“posures” or “robots**”) must be sent in an opinion-spam which then propagates into the bot. Some of the bots sent by this scammer can spread large amounts of fake news across the web. In other words, they’re telling you this is the bot’s wisdom of the crowd.
If I were scammer looking for scams, I’d just choose not to add it to my computer.
Have you received similar types of phishing attempts? How did you respond?
**Of course, if you are already clicking on a link in a webmail message, this type of bot would not have changed your behavior. In any case, it is all a bad idea to click through a Webmail address from a third party unless you are sure what you’re being presented with.
