French grammar trick #2: One or two Rs?

in #french9 years ago

The French language is full of exceptions and nasty rules when it comes to its grammar and orthography. This series of posts will give you some tricks to remember them quite easily.

Mourir, nourrir, courir, arriver… It can be quite difficult to remember which verb has two Rs and which has only one.
Here are some phrases to help you remember exactly that.

Mourir takes only one R, as we die only one time (mourir means to die).

Nourrir takes two Rs, as we feed ourselves many times (nourrir means to feed).

Courir takes only one R, as we lack air when running (courir means to run),
while when we arrive, we take all the air we want, hence arriver takes two Rs (arriver means to arrive).
