My Favorite Job as a Twenty-Something
Monday's #freewrite prompt is record, which reminds me I was a DJ once at a radio station and later the Program Director (PD) converting the station from the Top 40 to Country format. Boy did people hate me for that change. Still, it was a fun job.
My favorite songs were Stairway to Heaven and Hotel California because they gave me a least 5 minutes in the restroom. If you heard these two songs at any point in my session, then I was in the bathroom. When we went to Country I really had to work for a bathroom break because most of the songs rarely went over 3 minutes. You had to really want to go to the bathroom as a Country DJ.
I started out just reading the weather report. I remember how exciting it was to drop into the top of the hour to read the weather. At first, I felt like I was interrupting a private conversation and I held my breath. After a while it just became a rote event and I did it without thinking.
After a bit of experience, I introduced the music and even talked a bit about each artist.
My favorite records at the time were Aja by Steely Dan and Merle Haggard Presents His 30th Album.
One night when I was the PD, I was in charge of the jocks. One night the music started skipping and so I was called to figure out if the DJ had died or something. I went down to the station at 3 a.m. and found the DJ asleep. I woke him up. It turns out he slept most nights on the job. I had to fire him. Tough job for a 23-year-old!

How exciting to be a DJ! I was interested in a job like that, by the time I entered College as an adult of 38 years old, radio was on its way out and much was automated. It's nice to see that you got to have that experience and be a news anchor! Great freewrite!
It’s a job I really miss. Automation was taking a hold and I’m glad I got the opportunity. Podcasts are where it’s at now.
Firing someone is hard - but everything else about your job sounds great!!
Wow that must've been awesome fun :D Aaand a nice take on the prompt, good work! Keep it up :)
Anyhow, I'm in charge of delivering the latest prompt, so here you go:
