Sitting on my porch, I think about the days before light bulbs and wonder if we have improved our lives. We can read extra late, or sit in the glow of the yellow bulb and reflect on the day. We can stay up later than we would have in the past. Whenever we camp, I find myself heading to bed at least two hours early. Still the warm glow welcomes me in like the flames from a cave fire. I think we invented the light bulb to bring us closer to our ancestors who told stories in caves and painted by firelight.
