There's nothing more horrific than to see a coin from 1821 that has been whizzed. Cleaning a coin is bad enough, but when someone takes a polishing wheel to an old silver eight reale, it just makes my heart ache.
This old coin from Mexico was in good shape before someone ruined it. They turned a nice $200 coin, into a $30 coin. Of course they could have been trying to hide something with polishing it. Try to remember this, if your parents have old coins, try not to touch them without gloves on and...
Never clean old coins!

I guess they believed they were going to improve upon it. Pity, hm?

So horrific, even though it's ruined I bought it for the silver content @wandrnrose7 👍

Horrific things for coin lovers? I think so...

@wonderwop,
OK, here's the obvious question: Why not?
Is it because the patina is the only way to prove the coins actual age ... that it's not a modern counterfeit?

Cleaning removes mint luster. Mint luster is a major factor in determining value. It's like, would you rather buy a '57 Chevy with original paint or a repainted one? Most collectors would buy the original condition Chevy.
