Sipping nectar for strength, her wings shortened in length.
Living on borrowed time, her life is amazingly sublime.
She hurries by working double time.
As her short life nears the end, her young she will defend.
She must find a host for her eggs to be laid.
Instinct directs her; her pick is made.
A specific plant is needed, she will not be defeated.
It must be one her caterpillars will love to eat.
Before she takes her seat, she performs a test with her feet.
She scratches and tastes the leaf of the plant, leaning on a slant.
Verification is now complete, and perfectly discrete.
She has done what is necessary for her brood to survive,
Thanks to her, this species will continue to thrive.
