Power of the Tongue

There is unlimited power in the tongue and perhaps you have been on both sides of its influence. Some people know well how to wield its weight to make monumental change in their own lives and the lives of those who touch them, even briefly.

Bless the tongues of those who temper their words to impart kindness to all. I've been on both the giving and receiving end of healing and destructive tongues.

Childhood trains us through loving caregivers the meaning of words. If we are spoken to with words of love and encouragment those words matter a great deal. Harsh words by unkind parents and caregivers send mixed signals and children begin to accept that people who profess to love them say hurtful and damaging things and a child develops warped interpretations of how they should be treated and may grow into victims, or people who adopt the same type of tongue and are decensitized into recognizing how unhealthy their own behavior is, only to repeat or even go further into unhealthy relationships.

Love is fragile and trust is built with kindness, empathy, mercy and truth.

The tongue is a two-edged sword according to Biblical scripture and Budda teaches similar thoughts. Peace can be won with humble speech and behavior.

Training the tongue is a lifelong effort and the influence spanning generation after generation and is perhaps one of the most powerful tools we can hone in our lives to make the most difference either for good or evil.
