Lead by Example - Five Minute Freewrite

She was stunning when she walked in the little downtown church which my family attended. Her makeup flawless, her hair sassy and her high heels and leather mini shirt presented a showstopping scene.

All of the older matrons stared at her as she walked by on the gray haired gentleman's arm. Then the whispering began in earnest. I observed heads bobbing furiously.
This beauty's name was Rhonda. She sat in a pew two rows back from the preacher, oblivious to the gossipping church ladies.

I looked at my husband and said, "Someone should welcome her."

She had arrived with my husband's friend, Darrell. I slipped from my pew in my conservative fundemental dress and sensible heels and walked up the isle then slid in next to her and said, "Hi, I'm Amy. Welcome to Star Baptist Church."

The chattering church ladies took note of my move. They had been active in the congregation for more longer than me and were married to men of position in the church. Rhonda was sweet in addition to being gorgeous.

I returned to my pew with my husband and heard the sermon out. At the end of the service, one of these ladies, a deaconess, approached me with a pasted on smile on her makeupless face and unpainted nails clasped in front of her slim frame looking expectantly at me. We never previously had
held a conversation beyond "good morning."

In a conspiratorial whisper she leaned in to me amd said, "Perhaps you can instruct your friend on proper church attire." My eyebrows raised on their own volition and I replied, "I just met her, Lidia, perhaps you should welcome her to the Star Baptist fold."

Rhonda and me are best friends from that very day, but neither of us attend Star Baptist church any longer.
