A Dance to Remember

She bent to turn on the small radio on the floor and paused as clear notes flooded the empty dance studio. For years she came daily to train and coax young dancers to move in graceful rhythm to music like this. She moved to the center of the wood floor brushed to a dark shine with countless pairs of ballet slippers.

Turning, she raised her arms high and pointed a toe of her well used ballet shoes. Her feet acted on their own, known territory, they slipped across the floor and her eyes closed, feeling the beats like the professional she had been. Her dance leotard clung to slim curves as she spiralled in an ancient path. The leaps were harder than in her youth, but unforgettable.

When the song came to a powerful end she twirled lazily on her toes and brought her arms to her sides. They trembled ever so slightly. She stood statue still, then looked up to the wall of mirrors, almost a fun house reflection. She surveyed her prone figure one last time. She slowly walked to the radio, flicked of the power and grabbed her dance bag. She locked the studio for the very last time and placed the SOLD sign on the door and walked out into the warm summer night.
