Freewriting as Meditation

Let's start with silence. If you want to freewrite, get comfortable with silence, with saying nothing, waiting for nothing, expecting nothing. Only when you master the art of listening, are you able to freewrite, without trying to edit, coming back, or crossing out. Just let the words flow.

If you are familiar with voice typing via Google Docs, you can close your eyes. No need to hurry — relax, breathe, look inside yourself, because the most interesting things you are able to say are already there, waiting for you, smiling quietly, as your hidden treasure. You knew it was always there, how could you forget about that? Your treasure is your truth, and it's always with you, but you could be thousands of light years away from it.

No need to dig the internet, relentlessly searching for the most fresh information, the most entertaining stories, the most trending topics. Relax and enjoy — you can do it, you can just let the words flow. And if you can give life to this flow, you have power over words, you are the one who gives the words form.

The point in freewriting is to keep calm, find peace inside yourself, accept yourself, and believe there is value inside you. That’s why freewriting is a form of meditation.

And when you understand you don’t need anything to write, you don't need any outside information to create value, then you are free, and this is freewriting.

Every day upon waking, before anything else, write three pages long-hand (in a cheap spiral notebook is fine) - write nonstop, even if it's to say "I have nothing to say" - no more than 3 pages -

Yes, Julie Cameron has a different approach to freewriting more focused on the artist's soul healing than on writing per se.

Have our sver tried writing while at walking, @vitkolesnik ? Some say it's the best way of getting into the free writing flow.

I think writing on a black screen actually helps massively.

I like thinking and writing while walking. Tried voice input too but so far it doesn't fit. And you Elena?

I guess riding on a train with your phone at home is a pretty ideal situation to get into the flow.

Or the early morning hours . 5:30-9 when everything is still quiet. These are very effective moments for me, @vitkolesnik .

The voice record is useful once I have a structure very clear. But the stupid software makes too many mistakes in order to really rely on it. It's very frustrating if you have to go back through the text and correct every second word.
I truly believe finding your ideal state of work is the key to your most proficient self. But I can also see that it changes as your tasks are changing. I wish I had a moving edit suite for making films. Being locked in her litter room during the entire period of postproduction drives me mad.

I somehow adapted to Google voice in GDocs, but didn't yet make it with voice input on mobile, because, as you said, there could be too much things to correct. I use paper and pen when freewriting in a train, and it works just fine for me)

Loved coming across this article. This is a beautiful suggestion. Writing can feel like such an effort and rush of thoughts. Rediscovering some calm would be so good for me.

That's it, freewriting taken as a practice brings comfort and peace.
