Plug.

Keep plugging away.

Plugger.

Butt plug.

Plug it up.

The earth's plug was not working properly. Only Hazel knew this, and she didn't have much of a way to tell the rest of the world. She lived 500 miles from anyone, she had no phone, no computer, not even a pigeon. It was a slow drain, to be sure, but she was still afraid that if she took the time to walk to her nearest neighbor, too much of the earth would have drained away, and the rest might not be salvageable. But she wasn't sure it was much better what she was doing, just sitting most of every day with her finger in the hole. It couldn't be sustainable. Sometime or another, her finger would slip out while she was sleeping, and one day she just wouldn't wake up at all. Maybe her finger would stay in the hole even after she died, but eventually she'd decompose and her bone wouldn't be thick enough to stop the earth slipping away. She'd tried sticks of various sizes, and other odds and ends, but nothing seemed to work better than her finger. She sat there by the slow leak, wondering how it must look to a passing bird. Crazy lady, the bird must be thinking.

Wow, I was bummed it ended. Darned that timer. This could turn into a great mini novel. :)
