Plane clappers

I was recently on a flight and after the plane landed the person next to me started clapping as if it was some miraculous event? I don't know about you, but the plane actually landing and stopping was the exact result I was expecting. I could see clapping if the plane was out of control doing a nose dive and the pilot somehow safely landed the plane. But on a normal flight, besides maybe a flash break-dancing competition breaking out, I'm really not expecting much to happen that would warrant my applause. I wonder if these same people clap after a Taxi ride.
