5 Minute Freewrite: Spent and Tired

The Hero stumbled up to the door of his cabin, his left side aching terribly. Slumping against the rough-hewn frame, he pushed the door open, allowing the Sword of Swords to fall from his bloodied hand and clatter to the floor unceremoniously. With every step, he shed some piece of equipment like a lizard scratching off scales. With a clatter, the Spectral Shield rolled beneath his table and bumped into the wall. The Bow of Accuracy and its never-ending quiver of phoenix-fledged arrows landed in a pile beneath his Cloak of Shadows, and with a sigh, he squatted and unlaced his Thousand-Mile boots.

With a trilling purr, his cat sauntered up from under his rarely-used bed and stretched luxuriously. He unlaced the Gauntlets of Many-Punch and scratched under her silky chin. The Medallion that the princess had given him in thanks swung forward from his shirt, glinting once in the fading evening light. The cat swiped at it lazily. He pulled it over his head with a mixed expression on his face--something between a wry smile and exhausted disgust. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed it into the corner, where it landed with a metallic thud. The cat’s ears perked up in momentary interest, but she decided to butt his ankle with her head instead, mewing plaintively.

“Hard day of sleeping and eating mice, huh?” he muttered, the first words he’d spoken in a long time.

She climbed atop his knee, oblivious to the burns on his legs, and kneaded her paws in contentment.

Thanks again to @mariannewest for running this challenge. I used to write about this unnamed Hero in a lot of former little stories--he's always exhausted from having to save the world yet again. Maybe it's time for a new job.
