A knock on the door
It got louder each second.
Opening a crack
Not what she reckoned

A cigarette dangling
From surly lips she once knew.
He had been gone for years
And now wanted to be true?

A face with hard lines
Whiskey and women his song.
A question unknown
Why she stayed with him so long?

It was peaceful times
No ashtrays all over the house
No demeaning slurs
The only words from her mouth,

“Best be gone, you louse!”
