Freewrite: Children’s Game
When I saw the prompt I immediately thought of the game I played as a youngster called Red Light- Green Light.
The Gallagher family had a lot of children and when they came to visit my parents, we always played outside and this was one of the games. Our mothers would be inside enjoying a cuppa tea and talking about the latest happenings around the area.
Playing Green Light- Red Light was a nice change from the Cowboys and Indians game we usually played while running wildly around the large yard, hiding behind the big trees on the property and hollering and whooping.
We always played games that didn’t need any equipment. In reality we didn’t have anything aside from a baseball and bat but with this game we just needed ourselves.
A player would stand at a imaginary finish line and the rest of us would stand back at the starting line. When the Player at the finish line hollered green light we would all move forward. Then at some point he would holler Red Light and turn around and catch anyone still moving. If you were caught still moving, the penalty was to go back to the starting line. Eventually someone would reach the finish line and they would be the next one to start the game.
Thinking back this was a good exercise, not only in agility but in improving listening skills in children.

Thanks @shuvo. That’s a photo of the Blue Jay that comes around every day for treats.
there was a game like that we use to play. I cant remember what it was called but it was not red lights green lights.
Thanks for stopping by @paulag. It was a popular game back in the day probably with different names. @angiemitchell called it ‘Statues.’
ah yea Statues, thats it :-)
Hey redheadpei, I played the same game with my brothers and sisters, only we did not call it 'Green Light, Red Light.' We called it 'Statues.' It was loads of fun. By the way I had 6 siblings so there were always plenty of playmates in our home.
I can see why it would be called ‘Statues’, Angie. I was the oldest and a big age difference between me and the next sibling. It was great to have a big family visit. 💕
Hi @redheadpei. Love your post on this prompt. It does bring back memories for me. My siblings and I played that game too, and it was called "Red Light, Green Light." Oh, what wonderful memories. But we combined it with hop-scotch sometimes, so when the person at the end said "green light," we would race to the hop-scotch square. The 1st person to get there and claim the spot would be eligible to move on. The rest had to return to their previous spot. Then continue on. You can imagine there was some pushing, shoving, holding each other back. It was just so hilarious.
Thanks for the memories.
Haha @justclickindiva, I hadn’t thought of the game for years. Always nice memories thinking back on fun times. 😊 💕
You know, when I think back to those times, we had the most fun just being outside. Far cry from today's kids.
That’s so true. One hardy ever sees kids outdoors playing.
Hello friend @redheadpei, certainly with your story, you reminded me of my old days when I played with my cousins in the garden. Receive my affections.
Thanks @felixgarciap. I’m happy to bring back those memories to you, my friend. 😊
I play that game with my laughter yoga groups
How do you play it Marianne? While in a yoga position?
Great post Jo! Those were the good old days and I remember playing that game also. We spent most of our days outside playing such games (when not in school) and I believe that we were better for it! 💖
Thanks Dee! Yes, we always played outdoors as kids. no cell phones or computers then. 💕
You're very welcome Jo! 💖 💞
