5 Minute Freewrite: Tuesday - Prompt: gold
I continue to be amazed by the element known as gold. It has been passing hands for thousands of years as a store of value. Many people around the world wear some sort of gold jewelry everyday. I am actually wearing a 24 carat ring wedding band from Mene right now. However, have you ever heard of the protective qualities of gold? It can protect us from dangerous radiation. They are using gold foil right now to protect many of our satellites from being damaged from solar and cosmic rays. Some scientists are even suggesting that gold foil may hold the secret to keeping us safe as we depart our planet and begin to explore the rest of our galaxy!
We do need to find a way to mine gold without destroying the earth - or we have to use to get off the planet we destroyed LOL (just did a podcast on the environmental impact of gold mining...)

We've seen the tin foil hats of the schizophrenics but I'd not yet hear of "gold foil to protect many of our satellites from being damaged from solar and cosmic rays." COOL!! (Expensive too). Thanks for this! I love freewrites that wax scientific. :)

Is the shielding-foil on space-probes made from gold?
Multi-layer insulation, or MLI, is thermal insulation composed of multiple layers of thin sheets ... much less significant and radiation dominates. MLI gives many satellites and other space probes the appearance of being covered with gold foil.
Wow, you really did your research! From my understanding the use of gold foil was kept quiet by NASA for many years in order to win the space race.
