Free Write Sunday prompt 100 kilos of fish

This is my post for #freewrite Sunday by @mariannewest prompt 100 kilos of fish

In the fall Spanish Mackeral migrate south, they go by us in late October. They get to Salerno and for the most part, that is where they stay for the winter. The guys that live there were castnetting them with regular castnets but they were putting duct tape around the lead-line so the net would not collapse while sinking in deep water and the fish would gill.

There was an elderly fisherman who told my husband about a castnet design that he believed would work in an area where you can not have a castnet bigger than 6 feet. My husband took this design and made a net for catching Spanish mackerel. We were not going down there at this time so he gave it to one of our friends who was going down there. The guy came back and said it worked great and all the guys down there wanted to know how it was made. It had no tuck strings and no horn. It had a piece of rope or heavy mono ran through the meshes at the top. We called it a spreader net.

We could no longer catch anything here and had to go down there, that was some very long days, we had to get up at 3am and would not get home till 9 to 10 at night. But we were making money.

One day we were getting ready to drive back home and two of the fishermen said their fish house had so many mackerel that they would not be paying much for them and asked us if we would haul their fish back to our fish house and weigh them up for them. My husband said he would do it.

I do not know what a 100 kilos of fish equals to in pounds but we had way too many in the back of our truck. The fishbox in our truck would hold 1200 and we had it full, the guys had a smaller box and some coolers they put in our truck when we weighed them it came to 2,200 pounds.

We left Salerno right after dark and my husband says we are coon hunting, I say what?? He says our headlights are shining at the treetops. I told him that must be why I was having a hard time seeing the road. We drive a few miles when a semi in front of us had a blowout and my husband tried to move in the other lane and when he tried to straighten the wheel the truck kept going to the left. The front end of the truck was almost floating because we had to much weight in the back. Even when he would correct the steering wheel it would want to keep going. We made it to the fish house but our nerves were shot, also I prayed all the way. God is good.

Wow. That was double the load you were supposed to have. That must have been so scary!!!

100 kilo fish is about 250 lbs. you had way more than that!!!

I figured that would be a good prompt for you! 😀🐟

@mariannewest perfect prompt for me, thank you and now I know how many fish is in a 100 kilos. We were both scared and swore to never do that again.

This prompt was perfect for you! :D

With us 1 kilo is 2 pounds and 1 pound is 500 gram. So our pound is heavier as yours.

Great tip and net!
