Free Write Saturday prompt Freedom of Personal Power
This is my post for #freewrite Saturday prompt Freedon of Personal Power
A striker is what we call someone who fishes with you on your boat. For many many years, I was my husband's striker. I got up when he did, we fished where he wanted to fish and fished as long as he wanted to fish. I use to hate it when we would be going in and I could see the fish house and he says lets make one more set. Don't get me wrong, I love to fish with him and I am in no way saying I am a better fisherman than my husband, he is the best in our town and he is respected by all the other fisherman. But I love fishing my own boat, I love my freedom of personal power.
My husband tells me he knows the exact time I became a fisherman. It was when he had to go to a fisheries meeting on the west coast and would be gone for a few days. He told me to take the boat and set the jacks, this is back before they banned gillnets. We had been fishing together catching jacks. My husband figured out where they would be each morning and they would show just as the crows fly which is right before daylight. I had never set the net by myself and did not know if I could get it back in the boat without his help. So I put on my big girl pants and even though I had anxiety over doing it, I would give it my best. I got up that morning, drove to the fish house, we kept our boat tied to their dock, I got my ice and drove the boat in the dark to where the jacks would be and waited. The crows started flying so I watched the water and sure enough, I saw them. They push a wake ahead of them, so I waited till they got close enough, fish when scared will go back the direction they came, so I cut them off from that direction first and made my circle. Now the work began, I had to get 6oo yards of net filled with jacks back in the boat and get them loaded where I will not sink. I did it all correctly and after picking them out of the net and weighing them I had 1500 pounds of jacks. That day gave me the freedom of personal power and I wanted to run my own boat. My husband built a 24-foot boat for him to fish and I got my boat, which I still have but don't fish it much anymore.
Today I ran my pigfish traps but only got 50 bait. I also mended an old crab trap to put in the water, my husband tells me to just go buy a new one but I work hard for 25 dollars so I will use the mended one.
My husband cleaned his boat, I do not know how this scum gets on our boats when we trailer them.
Great story and empowering one, @myjob. Thanks for sharing how you gained your personal freedom. Love your fish stories. 🎣 😊
@redheadpei thank you for reading it. And the kind words.
Exactly! If the trap can be fix there's no need to buy a new one. You work too hard and you don't get paid what you deserve!
@blacklux we are as they say, the low man on the totem pole. We sell our fish to the fish house and they sell most of them to the public and make more than we make, all they have to do is keep them on ice. When they ship the fish north they get their money and the new buyer raises the price to the people, what started at a dollar a pound to us ends up being 10 dollars a pound, that is a huge markup.
This is my first time of knowing a striker is also a fishing partner.
That's very cool.
Am here to also deliver the new prompt to you.
