Be ready to learn the basics first (5 minute Freewrite)

in #freewrite7 years ago (edited)

Today's freewrite prompt by @mariannewest was once again one of those that immediately triggered me for taking part in today's freewrite mashup.

Today's prompt is "basics". In short, basics are a set of essential skills or tools enabling one to do something. The word "basics" is one of those multitalented words that can be used in a whole lot of contexts. In this post, I try to outline two of them, which have also a direct connection to me and my life.

The first context is me and my kids. We parents are responsible to teach our descendants a lot of basics. One of the first basics our kids have learned where to hold their bottle themselves, and as they grew up, there went a lot of basics after that: crawling, walking, talking, tooth brushing, eating alone, reading, math - to name a few of them. When they get bigger, this process does not stop. Be it cooking more than just bacon and eggs or repairing a bicycle, the list could be continued endlessly. As our kids are 16 and (nearly) 12 years old, they learned already quite a few, and I know they will learn even more.

The second context is me and programming. Back when I started my career as a developer (the whole story will be a topic to write on its own), I had to learn the basics. The basics started with some topics that fellow developers should be familiar with. What is a program? Why does it work? What does 'object orientation' mean? What types of 'objects' exist? Also, this list could be continued, but I have only 5 minutes 😏.

To sum it up - during our whole lives, as kids, teens and even as adults, we have to learn the basics when we start something completely new. If you are avoiding this process, you are going to stop yourself unnecessarily. So be ready to learn the basics first. Your skills will advance over time partly alone, partly by pushing them forward. But be ready to learn the basics first.

I learned how to program Basic too! Keep times.

Anyway, I'm bringing today's prompt and it reminds me of the movie Multiplicity where a guy makes a copy of himself to keep up. Then the copies start making copies: "He's special, all right. - We made a copy from Two. Sometimes a copy from a copy is not quite as sharp as the original."

Great movie! Anyway, today's prompt has to do with the word copy: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-266-5-minute-freewrite-thursday-prompt-copy. Join us at the @FreeWriteHouse.

And if we don't learn the basics - we often get lost...
