Day 61: 5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: my shoe got stuck in the mud

Let's go for a hike, he said.

No, just a short one, he said.

I know a great trail, he said.

It was a warm afternoon, but we were in the woods and the trail would be shaded. Bug spray was a must.
He wore a small daypack with a couple of water bottles in it. The wildflowers along the trail
were beautiful to see.
I knew there were bears, I had just seen one on my morning walk yesterday and we both turned tail and ran the other way, so I wasn't making any effort to be quiet. I wanted my presence known, and we were an hour or so back into the deep forest.

And then my shoe got stuck in the mud. It hadn't rained in weeks. I pulled it loose with a slurp, and kept on walking. And then I came to puddle, but I walked around it. The next puddle was bigger.

Come on, he said.

We are almost back to the road, he said.

And the next puddle was up to my knees. I could no longer see the trail. I was climbing over fallen trees, hidden in the now thigh deep water.

That shouldn't be water here, he said.

It's an hour back, he said.

The roads just over there, he said.

Keep going, he said.

And that's when I saw the newly built beaver dam. The little creek was now a shallow little lake.that covered the trail.
Expect the unexpected in the woods. Even when it's not a bear!
