FreeWrite: With Extra Servings Of Love
She always knew she was poorer than most of the kids in her class, and school. They brought different kinds of food from home everyday for recess, she stood in line in the mornings to get a chip the school handed out to the poor to exchange for a meal.
They had transport to school, she walked 4 miles one way. And when it rained, even though she liked getting wet, she had to make sure her books didn't get wet and struggled holding the bag in one hand and the umbrella in the other. Especially when the bag got too heavy and she needed to swap.
When there was a sale in school for comics and story books, she could only stare while her friends bought them. Except that one time, she stole money from the secret hiding place. Bought magazines and books for herself and for her friends who couldn't afford them like her. She was found out and got the beating of her life. And that was that.
She knew she had less, because when she was invited to birthday parties, the house had lots of food and guests and presents. She had to decide between a cake and a dress. She always chose the cake and had her 2 best friends come celebrate with the family.
But the one thing she never lacked was food. Every time she helped her mother bring the food to the table, she would check to see if her Mum made her favourite that day. Her mum was never stingy with food. As poor as they were, her mum tried to feed them the best she could. It wasn't anything fancy but there was so much love in preparing it, it always felt like a feast.
